Rona Ramon ( he, רונה רמון; 16 April 1964 – 17 December 2018) was a public activist, STEM influencer and supporter of the education and advancement of youth in Israel. Ramon was the widow of Colonel Ilan Ramon, the first Israeli astronaut, who died in the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster in 2003. She was the mother of Captain Assaf Ramon, a fighter pilot in the Israeli Air Force who was killed in a training accident on 13 September 2009. After the death of her husband and son, she established the Ramon Foundation which works with Israeli children with academic excellence to pursue their dreams. Biography Rona was born in Kiryat Ono, on 16 April 1964, to Israel and Gila Bar-Siman-Tov. Her parents Aliyah, emigrated from Turkey as part of the Youth Aliyah when they were 15 years old. Kiryat Ono ( he, קִרְיַת אוֹנוֹ) is a city in the Tel Aviv District of Israel. It is located east of Tel Aviv. In it had a population of . Modern Kiryat Ono is not to be confused with the biblical Ono, which was located in the area that is now Or Yehuda. History During the 18th and 19th centuries, the area of Kiryat Ono belonged to the Nahiyeh (sub-district) of Lod that encompassed the area of the present-day city of Modi'in-Maccabim-Re'ut in the south to the present-day city of El'ad in the north, and from the foothills in the east, through the Lod Valley to the outskirts of Jaffa in the west. This area was home to thousands of inhabitants in about 20 villages, who had at their disposal tens of thousands of hectares of prime agricultural land. A settlement named Kfar Ono was established in 1939. During the 1950s, a ma'abara (transit camp for new immigrants in Israel) was established nearby.
