Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club
The Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club is located in the northwestern area of Winnipeg, in the community of St. James. The curling club was started up in 1929 and was nicknamed the 'root cellar', it had only 2 sheets of ice at the time.http://www.curlamcc.ca Assiniboine Memorial CC Site/ The AMCC moved to their current site, at Vimy and Hamilton, in 1962. This new location was built with 4 sheets and then expanded to 8, as it has today. A small fire destroyed part of the clubrooms and arena in 1972, most of the original structure remained and was rebuilt. In 1992 the AMCC addressed the problem of the shifting Winnipeg 'gumbo' under the ice sheets. The ice was dug out 6 feet beneath the curling rink, filled with sand, and covered with styrofoam to prevent shifting of the ice. The 2008 Tim Hortons Brier, Canada's men's curling championship, was held from March 8 to 16 at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Skipped by Kevin Martin, Alberta defeated the defending champion, and reigning World Champion Glenn Howard and Team Ontario. The final pitted arguably the top 2 teams in the world, at least the top 2 teams in the World Curling Tour. The final, while close, failed to live up to expectations, and was widely considered boring, and was full of mistakes due to ice problems. Martin had a draw to the button in the tenth end to win the game. Dan Carey (curler)
Daniel J. Carey (born March 19, 1954 in Winnipeg) is a Canadian curler. He is a Canadian former Curling Champion and 4-time Manitoba Provincial Curling Champion. He played third for Vic Peters in 1992, defeating Jim Ursel in the Manitoba Provincial Championship final. The foursome went on to defeat Russ Howard in the 1992 Brier final, becoming the last rookie team to win the Brier until Kevin Koe did it 18 years later (2010). Carey (along with Peters, Chris Neufeld, and Don Rudd) returned to the Brier in 1993, but were eliminated in tiebreakers after a much-contested CCA rule change that cost them their first-place finish after the Round Robin. Stephen "Steve" Gould (born October 6, 1972 in Winnipeg, Manitoba) is a Canadians, Canadian retired curling, curler from Rural Municipality of Headingley, Headingley, Manitoba. As a lead for Jeff Stoughton, he won 2 World Championships and 3 Briers. He is currently the coach of the Brent Pierce Glossary_of_curling#Rink, rink. Career Gould played lead for Stoughton in two stints from 1995–97 and 2003 to March 2012.
