Ron Hall (Australian Footballer, Born 1921)
Ronald Clyde Hall (17 April 1921 – 16 November 1994) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Career Hall, a defender, was originally from Brighton, in the Victorian Football Association (VFA). He joined South Melbourne in the 1941 pre-season and was offered a place on their list, but opted to return to Brighton. Following a stint in Sydney playing for St George, Hall joined Melbourne in 1944. Restricted by army commitments, he made only five appearances in his first two years with Melbourne. Brighton is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 11 km south-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Bayside local government area. Brighton recorded a population of 23,252 at the 2021 census. Brighton is named after Brighton in England. History In England, on 29 August 1840, Henry Dendy (1800–81) purchased of Port Phillip land at £1 per acre, sight unseen, under the terms of the short-lived Special Survey regulations. Dendy arrived on 5 February 1841 to claim his land. The area was known as Dendy's Special Survey. The area Dendy was compelled to take, called "Waterville", was bound by the coastline to the west and the present day North Road, East Boundary Road and South Road. A town was surveyed in mid-1841, defined by the crescent-shaped street layout which remains today, and subdivided allotments were offered for sale. Brighton () is a seaside resort and one of the two main areas of the City of Brighton and Hove in the county of East Sussex, England. It is located south of London. 1946 VFL Season
The 1946 VFL season was the 50th season of the Victorian Football League (VFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition in Victoria. The season featured twelve clubs, ran from 20 April until 5 October, and comprised a 19-game home-and-away season followed by a finals series featuring the top four clubs. The league's thirds/under-19s competition played its inaugural season. The premiership was won by the Essendon Football Club for the eighth time, after it defeated by 63 points in the 1946 VFL Grand Final. Premiership season In 1946, the VFL competition consisted of twelve teams of 18 on-the-field players each, plus two substitute players, known as the 19th man and the 20th man. A player could be substituted for any reason; however, once substituted, a player could not return to the field of play under any circumstances. Brighton Football Club
Brighton Football Club was an Australian rules football club which played in the Victorian Football Association (VFA). The club was based in the Melbourne suburb of Brighton, and was nicknamed the Penguins. After suffering financial hardship throughout the 1950s, Brighton moved to Caulfield and became the Caulfield Bears in the early to mid-1960s. History An advertisement in '' The Argus'' on 8 June 1859 announced a meeting to be held on the 9th of that month, at the Devonshire Hotel, to form the Brighton Football Club. There are references to an active Brighton Park club in 1867, and Brighton Football club in 1872, 1878, 1882 and 1883. Those clubs may or may not have been connected. The club is believed to have been formed in 1885 and seven years later became a foundation member of the Metropolitan Junior Football Association. ''The Argus'' was an Australian daily morning newspaper in Melbourne from 2 June 1846 to 19 January 1957, and was considered to be the general Australian newspaper of record for this period. Widely known as a conservative newspaper for most of its history, it adopted a left-leaning approach from 1949. ''The Argus''s main competitor was David Syme's more liberal-minded newspaper, ''The Age''. History The newspaper was originally owned by William Kerr, who was also Melbourne's town clerk from 1851–1856 and had been a journalist at the ''Sydney Gazette'' before moving to Melbourne in 1839 to work on John Pascoe Fawkner's newspaper, the '' Port Phillip Patriot''. St George Australian Football Club Inc is an Australian Football club competing in the AFL Sydney competition and based in the area of St George, New South Wales. At one stage affiliated with the Adelaide Crows football club, they reverted to their traditional red and white colours in 2009. They are known as the Dragons. History The club formed in 1929. Their home ground is Olds Park, Penshurst. St George have been successful in recent seasons, including grand final appearances in 2004 and 2007 but the club is still aiming for their first premiership since 1993 after defeat in both those grand finals.
