Roméo Savoie
Roméo Savoie (March 9, 1928 – October 14, 2023) was a Canadian postwar and contemporary artist. One of the first abstract painters in Eastern Canada, the artist's body of work includes more than 4,000 paintings, 50 buildings, six poetry anthologies, and one novel. Savoie, who was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada (CM) in the 2010 Canadian honours for his contributions to painting, architecture, and literature, participated in over thirty solo exhibits and as many group ones. His works are a part of major public and private collections in Canada and France. Early life Roméo Savoie was born in Moncton, New-Brunswick, on March 9, 1928. His father, Calixte Savoie, was a Canadian senator (1955-1970), a businessman, school principal, and teacher. Calixte F. Savoie (August 23, 1895 – December 2, 1985) was a Canadian businessman, school principal, teacher and politician. Born in Bouctouche, New Brunswick, he was summoned to the Senate of Canada in 1955. An Independent Liberal, he represented the senatorial division of L'Acadie, New Brunswick. He resigned in 1970. The Université de Moncton is a Canadian francophone university in New Brunswick. It includes campuses in Edmundston, Moncton, and Shippagan. The university was founded in 1963 following the recommendations of the royal commission on higher education in New Brunswick. The Acadians (french: Acadiens , ) are an ethnic group descended from the French who settled in the New France colony of Acadia during the 17th and 18th centuries. Most Acadians live in the region of Acadia, as it is the region where the descendants of a few Acadians who escaped the Expulsion of the Acadians (aka The Great Upheaval / ''Le Grand Dérangement'') re-settled. Most Acadians in Canada continue to live in majority French-speaking communities, notably those in New Brunswick where Acadians and Francophones are granted autonomy in areas such as education and health. Miller Brittain
Miller Gore Brittain (November 12, 1912 – January 21, 1968) was a Canadian artist from Saint John, New Brunswick. Early life Brittain was born and raised in Saint John. He studied art with Elizabeth Russell Holt in Saint John and under Harry Wickey in New York City. In 1932, after living in New York, he returned to Saint John, where he worked at clerical and construction jobs and opened an art studio on the waterfront. During this period, he captured realistic scenes of everyday life in the city which incorporated social commentary. During the 1930s, he joined the Oxford Group, a Christian organization. Life in Saint John After studying in New York, Brittain felt he didn't have to leave the region to make a career as an artist. However, at the time Saint John was still recovering from three major fires and was in the middle of the Depression.
