Sancho Dávila Toledo (Sancho de Avila) (Ávila, Old Castile, 1546, – Plasencia, Cáceres, 6 or 7 December 1625) was a Spanish bishop. He was of a distinguished family, and was known as a learned preacher. Life He completed his ecclesiastical studies and received his doctorate at the University of Salamanca. He was afterwards consecrated bishop and was, at different times, bishop of Cartagena, bishop of Jaen in Andalusia, bishop of Siguenza in Old Castile, in 1615, and, seven years later, bishop of Plasencia, where he remained until his death. He had been a confessor of Theresa of Avila. Bernardo de Sandoval y Rojas (20 April 1546 – 7 December 1618) was a Spanish bishop and cardinal who was Grand Inquisitor of Spain from 1608 to 1618. Biography Bernardo de Sandoval y Rojas was born in Aranda de Duero on April 20, 1546, the son of Hernando de Rojas y Sandoval and Maria Chacon Guevara. He was the second oldest of nine siblings. He was the uncle of Francisco Gómez de Sandoval, 1st Duke of Lerma. His uncle, Cristóbal de Rojas y Sandoval, Bishop of Oviedo granted him the tonsure on November 13, 1555. He attended the University of Alcalá, where he studied under Ambrosio Morales and received his ''bachillerato'' on June 18, 1566; his licentiate, October 25, 1567; and a doctorate in arts, November 3, 1567. Francisco Sarmiento Mendoza
Francisco Sarmiento de Mendoza (Burgos, 10 July 1525 - Jaén, 9 June 1595) was a Spanish canon lawyer and bishop. Life Mendoza was born into a noble family at Burgos. At the age of 21 years he already occupied a professorial chair in canon law at Salamanca. After being auditor for six years at Valladolid, he was appointed Auditor of the Rota in Rome, and held this office for twelve years. In 1574 he became Bishop of Astorga; he was transferred to the See of Jaén in 1580. He died at Jaén. Works Among his works on canon law are "Selectarum interpretationum libri VIII" (Rome, 1571, Burgos, 1573, 1575, Antwerp, 1616), and "De redditibus eccleciasticis" (Rome, 1569, Burgos, 1573, 1575). In the latter, which is dedicated to Pope Pius V, he argues against Martin Azpilcueta, that clerics are not bound in justice, but only in charity, to give to the poor that part of their revenues which is not necessary for their own sustenance.
