Roman Catholic Diocese Of Vĩnh Long
The Diocese of Vĩnh Long ( la, Dioecesis Vinhlongensis) is a Roman Catholic diocese in southern Vietnam. The current bishop is Peter Huỳnh Văn Hai, since October 2015. The creation of the diocese in present form was declared November 24, 1960. The diocese covers an area of 6,772 km², and is a suffragan diocese of the Archdiocese of Ho Chi Minh City. By 2014, the diocese of Vĩnh Long had about 199,404 Catholics (4.5% of the population), 179 priests and 209 parishes. St. Anne’s Cathedral in Vĩnh Long town has been assigned as the Cathedral of the diocese. Jacques Nguyễn Văn Mầu (22 January 1914 – 31 January 2013) was a Vietnamese bishop of the Roman Catholic Church. Biography Jacques Mầu was born in Bà Rịa in 1914. He was ordained a priest on 21 September 1940 and served as the Rector of Saint Joseph Major Seminary in Saigon from 1966 to 1968. He was appointed Bishop of Vĩnh Long by Pope Paul VI, following the resignation of Bishop Antoine Nguyễn Văn Thiện on 12 July 1968. Antoine Nguyễn Văn Thiện
Antoine Nguyễn Văn Thiện (13 March 1906 – 13 May 2012) was a Vietnamese Roman Catholic bishop and the oldest of the Catholic Church at 106 years of age. He was also one of the last living bishops to have served in South Vietnam. Born in Cái Cồn, in the Sóc Trăng province of French Cochinchina, Thiện was ordained a priest on 20 February 1932. He was appointed the bishop of Vĩnh Long in November 1960 and received episcopal consecration in January 1961. He resigned that position in 1968 and was appointed a titular bishop of Hispellum the same month. He became the oldest living Roman Catholic bishop on 6 October 2005, with the death of Bishop Ettore Cunial at age 99. Thiện died in Nice, France, on 13 May 2012, aged 106. Pierre Martin Ngô Đình Thục () (6 October 1897 – 13 December 1984) was the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Huế, Roman Catholic Archbishop of Huế, South Vietnam, Vietnam, and later a sedevacantist bishop who was excommunicated by the Vatican and allegedly reconciled with the Vatican before his death in 1984. He was a member of the Ngô family who ruled South Vietnam in the years leading up to the Vietnam War. He was the founder of the Dalat University. Today, various Independent Catholic and sedevacantist groups claim to have derived their apostolic succession from Thục.
