The Diocese of Jaffna ( la, Dioecesis Jaffnensis) is a Latin Church ecclesiastical territory or diocese of the Catholic Church in northern Sri Lanka. Latin Catholicism in the diocese's territory date to the time of St. Francis Xavier. The current bishop is Justin Gnanapragasam. History The Apostolic Vicariate of Jaffna was created on 17 February 1845 from the Diocese of Ceylon. On 1 September 1886 it was promoted to a diocese. Leo Rajendram Antony
Leo Rajendram Antony (18 April 1927 − 3 December 2012) was a Sri Lankan Roman Catholic bishop. He studied at St Patrick's College, Jaffna , motto_translation = By faith and labour , location = Mathews Road, Gurunagar , city = Jaffna , province = Northern Province , country = Sri Lanka , coordinates ..., for nearly nine years (1940–1948). He was ordained as a priest in 1954 and served at the Nallur Mission and then was selected to serve the bishop of Trinco/Batticolo as his secretary. Later he returned to Jaffna and was appointed as a director of the Rosarian Ashram in Thologatty. In 1966, he was appointed to the cathedral as a pastor and from there was chosen to the auxiliary bishop of Jaffna in 1968. Bishop Charles Lavigne, S.J. was a Roman Catholic Latin Rite bishop from France who was appointed as the first Vicar Apostolic in the Syro-Malabar Catholic Vicariate of Kottayam on 20 May 1887. After shifting the seat of Kottayam Vicariate to Changanacherry on 16 September 1890, his term ended on 28 July 1896. Roman Catholicism In Sri Lanka
The Catholic Church in Sri Lanka is part of the worldwide Catholic Church, under the spiritual leadership of the pope in Rome. The country comes under the province of Colombo and is made up of 12 dioceses including one archdiocese. Right Reverend Dr. Joseph Kingsley Swampillai (born 9 December 1936) is a Sri Lankan Tamil priest and former Roman Catholic Bishop of Trincomalee. Early life and family Swampillai was born on 9 December 1936 in Kayts on the island of Velanaitivu in northern Ceylon. He was educated at St. Patrick's College, Jaffna. Career Swampillai was ordained as a priest in December 1961.Even as priest he was chosen to act as a Secretary to Apostolic Nunciature for a period. In addition to his duties as a general secretary and Chancellor to the former Bishop of Jaffna, he was also the General Manager of Catholic Schools in the Diocses of Jaffna from 1975 to 1983.
