The Roman Catholic Diocese of Szombathely ( la, Dioecesis Sabariensis) is a Latin rite suffragan diocese in the Ecclesiastical province of the Metropolitan Veszprém in Hungary. Its cathedral episcopal see is Szombathely Cathedral ( hu, Sarlósboldogasszony székesegyházi), dedicated to the Visitation of Our Lady, in the city of Szombathely. History * June 17, 1777: Established as Diocese of Szombathely (German ''Steinamanger''), on territories split off from the Diocese of Veszprém (also Hungary) and then Diocese of Zagreb (Croatia). Its first bishop was John Szily (1777–1799), who built the episcopal residence and the cathedral. His successor, Cardinal Franz Herzen (1799–1804), was envoy of Austrian emperor Joseph II to the Holy See. Szombathely Cathedral
The Our Lady of the Visitation Cathedral ( hu, Sarlósboldogasszony székesegyházi) also called Szombathely Cathedral or Cathedral of the Visitation of Our Lady is the name given to a religious building affiliated with the Catholic Church in the city of Szombathely in Hungary, it is the principal church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Szombathely, Diocese of Szombathely. With the establishment of a diocese in 1777 the construction of a cathedral became necessary. A Baroque building in classical style began in 1791 and was completed in 1797. However, the interior work continued until 1814. The Cathedral of the Visitation is located in the ancient forum of the Roman city of Sabaria, Savaria. The architect, Melchior Hefele, was responsible for the plans. Joseph II (German: Josef Benedikt Anton Michael Adam; English: ''Joseph Benedict Anthony Michael Adam''; 13 March 1741 – 20 February 1790) was Holy Roman Emperor from August 1765 and sole ruler of the Habsburg lands from November 29, 1780 until his death. The Camerlengo of the Sacred College of Cardinals was the treasurer of the College of Cardinals in the Catholic Church. The title is based on an Italian word for chamberlain, a word no longer used in secular contexts. The position existed from at least 1272 until 1997, when it was allowed to lapse. The Camerlengo administered all property, fees, funds and revenue belonging to the College of Cardinals, celebrated the requiem mass for a deceased cardinal and was charged with the registry of the '' Acta Consistoralia''. Franziskus von Paula Herzan von Harras or František de Paula Hrzán z Harasova (5 April 1735, in Prague – 1 June 1804, in Vienna) was a Roman Catholic cardinal from what is now the Czech Republic. Life Baptized on 9 April 1735, von Harras graduated from the Gregoriana in Rome on 29 March 1757 - at that time he was living in the German College. On 18 February 1758 he became a priest and on auditor of the Roman Rota. He also served as Austria's ambassador to the Holy See. He was made a cardinal on 12 July 1779 by Pope Pius VI and 11 December 1780 granted the titular church of San Girolamo degli Schiavoni. The Diocese of Knin ( la, Tininum, also ''Tinum'') was founded in 1050 and is today a titular see of the Latin Church of the Catholic Church. János Szily
János Szily (20 August 1735, Felsőszopor - 2 June 1799, Szombathely) was a Hungarian Catholic bishop and patron of the arts. Biography He was born to a Catholic father and a Lutheran mother. After completing his primary and secondary studies at Jesuit schools in Sopron, he embarked on an ecclesiastical career, which led him to the Collegium Germanicum et Hungaricum in Rome, where he was an honor student. During these years, he became a friend of the future Cardinal, Franziskus Herzan von Harras, from Bohemia. In 1757, he was ordained a Deacon by Cardinal at the Lateran Basilica. Upon returning to his homeland in 1758, he became Secretary to , Bishop of the Diocese of Győr. In 1775, Queen Maria Theresa of Austria nominated him to be Bishop of the Diocese of Knin. This was confirmed by the Vatican later that same year and he was consecrated by Bishop Zichy. The Roman Rite ( la, Ritus Romanus) is the primary liturgical rite of the Latin Church, the largest of the ''sui iuris'' particular churches that comprise the Catholic Church.
