Roman Catholic Diocese Of Port-Vila
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Port-Vila (Latin: ''Dioecesis Portus Vilensis''; French language, French: ''Diocèse de Port-Vila'') in Vanuatu is a suffragan diocese of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Nouméa. History The first Catholic mission in Vanuatu was started in 1887 at Mele (island), Mele on Efate, by the Society of Mary (Marists), Marist Father Le Forestier, three other Marist priests and a brother. The greatest growth of Catholic converts took place in the north, where the French influence was strong. This was especially true in Espiritu Santo and Malekula. In 1901 it was first erected as the Prefecture Apostolic of New Hebrides, with Victor Douceré as apostolic prefect. In 1904 it became a Vicariate Apostolic. In 1966, it was elevated as the Diocese of Port-Vila. Tropical Cyclone Pam, of March 2015, was the second List of the most intense tropical cyclones, most intense tropical cyclone of the south Pacific Ocean in terms of sustained winds and is regarded as one o ...

Cyclone Pam
Severe Tropical Cyclone Pam was the second most intense tropical cyclone of the South Pacific Ocean in terms of sustained winds and is regarded as one of the worst natural disasters in the history of Vanuatu. A total of 15–16 people lost their lives either directly or indirectly as a result of Pam with many others injured. The storm's impacts were also felt, albeit to a lesser extent, to other islands in the South Pacific, most notably the Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, and New Zealand. Pam is the third most intense storm of the South Pacific Ocean according to pressure, after Winston of 2016 and Zoe of 2002. It is also the second most intense tropical cyclone in 2015, only behind Hurricane Patricia. In addition, Pam is tied with Orson, Monica, Marcus and Fantala for having the second strongest ten-minute maximum sustained winds in the Southern Hemisphere. Thousands of homes, schools and buildings were damaged or destroyed, with an estimated 3,300 people displaced as a re ...

Catholic Church In Vanuatu
The Catholic Church in Vanuatu is part of the worldwide Catholic Church, under the spiritual leadership of the Pope in Rome. Catholics constitute 13% of the population of Vanuatu. The church is organized into one diocese based in the capital of Port Vila. The diocese is a member of the Pacific Bishops Conference. History The first ever mass in Oceania was performed on May 14, 1606, when Spanish explorer Pedro de Quiros landed on Espiritu Santo with four priests and eight brothers, some of which were Franciscans and St John of God, and celebrated Pentecost. In 1875 mostly Catholic Tannese settlers wrote to the French government asking that the islands be claimed by France. A permanent mission of the Marist Fathers was established with considerable difficulty in 1887. The mission in Port Vila developed rapidly in the next twenty years. The islands' first native named bishop, Michel Visi, was named at April 12, 1997 and served till his death in 2007. An ambassador to the Holy See, ...

Natural Disasters
A natural disaster is "the negative impact following an actual occurrence of natural hazard in the event that it significantly harms a community". A natural disaster can cause loss of life or damage property, and typically leaves some economic damage in its wake. The severity of the damage depends on the affected population's resilience and on the infrastructure available. Examples of natural hazards include: avalanche, coastal flooding, cold wave, drought, earthquake, hail, heat wave, hurricane (tropical cyclone), ice storm, landslide, lightning, riverine flooding, strong wind, tornado, typhoon, tsunami, volcanic activity, wildfire, winter weather. In modern times, the divide between natural, man-made and man-accelerated disasters is quite difficult to draw. Human choices and activities like architecture, fire, resource management or even climate change potentially play a role in causing "natural disasters". In fact, the term "natural disaster" has been called a misnomer ...
