The Archdiocese of Yangon ( la, Archidioecesis Yangonensis) is a Latin Church ecclesiastical territory or diocese of the Catholic Church in Myanmar. Charles Bo, SDB was appointed Archbishop of Yangon by Pope John Paul II on May 24, 2003. History The diocese was erected as the Apostolic Vicariate of Southwestern Burma by Pope Pius IX on November 27, 1866, and renamed as the Southern Burma on July 19, 1870 and later as the Apostolic Vicariate of Rangoon on May 7, 1953. It was elevated to the rank of a metropolitan archdiocese by Pope Pius XII on January 1, 1955, with the suffragan sees of Mawlamyine, Pathein, Pyay and Hpa-an which was newly erected on 24 January 2009. Pope John Paul II renamed it as the Archdiocese of Yangon on October 8, 1991. The archdiocese's motherchurch and thus seat of its archbishop is St. Mary's Cathedral. The Roman Rite ( la, Ritus Romanus) is the primary liturgical rite of the Latin Church, the largest of the ''sui iuris'' particular churches that comprise the Catholic Church. It developed in the Latin language in the city of Rome and, while distinct Latin liturgical rites such as the Ambrosian Rite remain, the Roman Rite has gradually been adopted almost everywhere in the Latin Church. In medieval times there were numerous local variants, even if all of them did not amount to distinct rites, yet uniformity increased as a result of the invention of printing and in obedience to the decrees of the Council of Trent of 1545–63 (see ''Quo primum''). Charles Maung Bo
Charles Maung Bo ( my, ချားလ်မောင်ဘို, ; born 29 October 1948) is a Burmese Catholic prelate who has served as Archbishop of Yangon since 7 June 2003. He was created a cardinal by Pope Francis in 2015. Early life and education Bo was born on 29 October 1948, in Monhla Village, Shwebo District, Sagaing Region, Myanmar to parents John and Juliana Aye Tin. Bo's father, a farmer, died when he was 2. Thereafter, he was sent to a Salesian-run boarding school in Mandalay. From 1962 to 1976, Bo studied at the Nazareth Aspirantate, a Salesian seminary, in Anisakan village, near Maymyo (now Pyin Oo Lwin). Career Bo was ordained a priest of the Salesians of Don Bosco order on 9 April 1976. He was appointed as prefect of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Lashio in 1986.
