Rollo Of Normandy
Rollo ( nrf, Rou, ''Rolloun''; non, Hrólfr; french: Rollon; died between 928 and 933) was a Viking who became the first ruler of Normandy, today a region in northern France. He emerged as the outstanding warrior among the Norsemen who had secured a permanent foothold on Frankish soil in the valley of the lower Seine. After the Siege of Chartres in 911, Charles the Simple, the king of West Francia, granted them lands between the mouth of the Seine and what is now Rouen in exchange for Rollo agreeing to end his brigandage, swearing allegiance to him, religious conversion and a pledge to defend the Seine's estuary from Viking raiders. The name Rollo is first recorded as the leader of these Viking settlers in a charter of 918, and he continued to reign over the region of Normandy until at least 928. David Rollo (footballer)
David Rollo (26 August 1891 – 17 February 1963) was an Ireland (IFA) international footballer. Club career Rollo played his football in Northern Ireland and Wales with Brantwood, Cliftonville, Distillery, West End, Mountpottinger and Linfield, before joining English side Blackburn Rovers for a £2,000 fee in December 1919. Predominantly a half-back, he was nevertheless played at right-back at Ewood Park following the retirement of Bob Crompton. He left Rovers for Second Division club Port Vale in August 1927, and made his debut in a 2–2 draw with Nottingham Forest at The Old Recreation Ground on 27 August. Lieutenant General Sir William Raoul Rollo, (born August 1955) is a former senior British Army officer. Military career Rollo was commissioned as a second lieutenant (on probation) in the Territorial and Army Volunteer Reserve on 10 March 1977. He was then granted a short service commission, as a University Candidate, in the Blues and Royals on 4 September that year. His commission was subsequently confirmed and he was promoted to lieutenant, with seniority from 4 September 1975. He was promoted to captain on 4 March 1980, and to major on 30 September 1987. Andrew Rollo, 5th Lord Rollo, (18 November 1703, Duncrub – 20 June 1765, Leicester) was a Scottish army commander in Canada and Dominica during the Seven Years' War, who led the British land forces in the capture of Dominica on 6 June 1761. Life Lord Rollo was the son of Robert Rollo, 4th Lord Rollo (c. 1680–1758) and Mary Roll, daughter to Sir Henry Rollo of Woodside. He was commissioned into the army at the age of forty in order to fight during the War of the Austrian Succession he fought at the Battle of Dettingen in 1743, being promoted to Major in June 1750, and by 1756 he commanded the 22nd Regiment of Foot. Rollo Percival Loring Weeks (born 20 March 1987) is a British businessman and former actor. He is best known for his titular roles in the films '' The Little Vampire'' (2000) and ''The Thief Lord'' (2006). Vice-Admiral Edmond Rollo Mainguy, (11 May 1901 – 29 April 1979) was a senior officer in the Royal Canadian Navy. Naval career Mainguy was born in Victoria, British Columbia, on 11 May 1901. He attended the Royal Naval College of Canada in 1915 during the First World War. Robert Rollo Jack (4 April 1902 – 1994) was a footballer who played primarily as an inside right in the Football League in the 1920s and 1930s. He was the brother of David, the England international footballer, whilst his father Bob was also a professional footballer and manager. Rollo started as a trainee with Plymouth Argyle, making his debut on 23 December 1922 against Watford, before moving north to join Bolton Wanderers for £1500, where his brother was playing. George Rollo Hayman (4 May 1925 – 3 April 2008) was a Rhodesian farmer and politician. A member of the House of Assembly, he served in several portfolios as a member of the Cabinet of Rhodesia under Prime Minister Ian Smith. Born in the United Kingdom, he moved to Southern Rhodesia at age four and served as a Royal Air Force pilot in World War II.
