Roland Piétri
Roland Piétri (1910 in Paris – 27 October 1986 in the same city), was a French actor and theatre director. Biography Roland Piétri was co-director of the Comédie des Champs-Élysées from 1944 to 1948 with Claude Sainval and for one season (1946–1947), directed the Centre dramatique de l'Est based in Colmar. There he established a troupe with the comedians Françoise Christophe, André Reybaz, Catherine Toth. He then returned to the Comédie des Champs-Élysées and became theatre director of Jean Anouilh's plays. L'Alouette
''The Lark'' () is a 1952 play about Joan of Arc by the French playwright Jean Anouilh. It was presented on Broadway in English in 1955, starring Julie Harris as Joan and Boris Karloff as Pierre Cauchon. It was produced by Kermit Bloomgarden. Lillian Hellman made the English adaptation and Leonard Bernstein composed the incidental music. The two stars of the play reprised their roles in a 1957 television production of the play, as part of the anthology series '' Hallmark Hall of Fame''. A different television adaptation aired in 1958 in Australia. There is another English translation by Christopher Fry. Plot summary The play covers the trial, condemnation, and execution of Joan, but has a highly unusual ending. Robert Thomas (28 September 1927 in Gap, Hautes-Alpes – 3 January 1989) was a French writer, actor and film director. As a writer, almost from the beginning, he was fascinated by a curious genre that he helped invent: the comédie policière or comedy thriller, of which ''Eight Women'' is an example. In 1960, Thomas had a hit with ''Trap for a Lonely Man'', a humorous murder mystery which was an overnight success in Paris. Alfred Hitchcock bought the rights and the play established Thomas as a writer of psychological crime dramas with a distinctively Gallic comic twist. The following year the second outing of ''Eight Women'' was far more successful as it won the Hachette Prix du Quai des Orfevres for Best Play in 1961. Théâtre De Paris
The Théâtre de Paris is a theatre located at 15, rue Blanche in the 9th arrondissement of Paris. It includes a second smaller venue, the Petit Théâtre de Paris. History The first theatre on the site was built by the Duke of Richelieu in 1730. Baron Ogny bought it in 1779 and renamed it Folie-Richelieu. Then during the First Empire it was directed by Fortunée Hamelin, a celebrated member of the ''Merveilleuses'' ("marvelous women") of the Directoire era. In 1811, the Folie-Richelieu was transformed into a park, then demolished completely in 1851 in the redevelopment under Baron Haussmann. ''Becket or The Honour of God'' (french: Becket ou l'honneur de Dieu) is a 1959 play written in French by Jean Anouilh. It is a depiction of the conflict between Thomas Becket and King Henry II of England leading to Becket's assassination in 1170. It contains many historical inaccuracies, which the author acknowledged. Background Anouilh's interpretation of the historical story, though often ironic, is more straightforward than T. S. Eliot's 1935 play on the same subject, ''Murder in the Cathedral'', which was intended primarily as a religious treatment. However, there are one or two similarities in the interpretation. In the introduction to the play, Anouilh explained that he based it on a chapter of an old book he had bought because its green binding looked good on his shelves.
