Roland Fremont Pryce
Roland Fremont ("Monty") Pryce (1906-1984) was a United States naval officer who served as a Naval Adviser to the Secretary of State at the Paris Peace Conference and Council of Foreign Ministers after World War II. Pryce was born on July 10, 1906, in Ebensburg, Cambria County, Pennsylvania, and graduated from the United States Naval Academy in the Class of 1927. Pryce served as Commanding Officer of the submarines USS ''S-38'' (1938–40); USS ''Spearfish'' (1941-42); and USS ''Shad'' (1943). In 1944, he was involved in the preparation and execution of the Normandy landings as Operations Officer, 12th Fleet. After World War II, Pryce served as Deputy Naval Adviser to Secretary of State for the Paris Peace Conference and Naval Adviser for the Nov.-Dec. 1946 Council of Foreign Ministers. Paris Peace Treaties, 1947
The Paris Peace Treaties (french: Traités de Paris) were signed on 10 February 1947 following the end of World War II in 1945. The Paris Peace Conference lasted from 29 July until 15 October 1946. The victorious wartime Allied powers (principally the United Kingdom, Soviet Union, United States and France) negotiated the details of peace treaties with Italy, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, and Finland. The treaties allowed the defeated Axis powers to resume their responsibilities as sovereign states in international affairs and to qualify for membership in the United Nations.They each joined the United Nations on 14 December 1955. The third USS ''Adirondack'' (AGC-15) was laid down on 18 November 1944 under a Maritime Commission contract by the North Carolina Shipbuilding Company in Wilmington, North Carolina; launched on 13 January 1945, sponsored by Mrs. E. William Thornton Pryce
William Thornton Pryce (1932–2006) was a United States diplomat and Ambassador to Honduras. Pryce was born in San Diego, California on 19 July 1932. His father, Roland Fremont Pryce, was a career naval officer. He graduated from Ebensburg High School, Wesleyan University and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. After three years' service as an officer in the U.S. Navy, he joined the Foreign Service in 1958. Pryce, a career Foreign Service Officer, served overseas in posts in Latin America and the Soviet Union. His Washington posts included service as assistant to Under Secretary of State Thomas C. Mann and to Ambassador Ellsworth Bunker. In the 1980s and early 1990s, Pryce was an alternate representative of the United States to the Organization of American States and served as senior director of the National Security Council. The Order of the Phoenix ( el, Τάγμα του Φοίνικος) is an order of Greece, established on 13 May 1926, by the republican government of the Second Hellenic Republic to replace the defunct Royal Order of George I. The order was retained after the restoration of the monarchy in 1935 and continues to be awarded by the current Third Republic. Croix De Guerre
The ''Croix de Guerre'' (, ''Cross of War'') is a military decoration of France. It was first created in 1915 and consists of a square-cross medal on two crossed swords, hanging from a ribbon with various degree pins. The decoration was first awarded during World War I, again in World War II, and in other conflicts; the '' croix de guerre des théâtres d'opérations extérieures'' ("cross of war for external theatres of operations") was established in 1921 for these. The Croix de Guerre was also commonly bestowed on foreign military forces allied to France. The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service. It was established on 4 June 1917 by King George V and comprises five classes across both civil and military divisions, the most senior two of which make the recipient either a knight if male or dame if female. There is also the related British Empire Medal, whose recipients are affiliated with, but not members of, the order. Bronze Star Medal
The Bronze Star Medal (BSM) is a United States Armed Forces decoration awarded to members of the United States Armed Forces for either heroic achievement, heroic service, meritorious achievement, or meritorious service in a combat zone. When the medal is awarded by the Army, Air Force, or Space Force for acts of valor in combat, the "V" device is authorized for wear on the medal. When the medal is awarded by the Navy, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard for acts of valor or meritorious service in combat, the Combat "V" is authorized for wear on the medal. Distant Early Warning Line
The Distant Early Warning Line, also known as the DEW Line or Early Warning Line, was a system of radar stations in the northern Arctic region of Canada, with additional stations along the north coast and Aleutian Islands of Alaska (see Project Stretchout and Project Bluegrass), in addition to the Faroe Islands, Greenland, and Iceland. It was set up to detect incoming bombers of the Soviet Union during the Cold War, and provide early warning of any sea-and-land invasion. The DEW Line was the northernmost and most capable of three radar lines in Canada and Alaska. The first of these was the joint Canadian-United States Pinetree Line, which ran from Newfoundland to Vancouver Island just north of the Canada–United States border, but even while it was being built there were concerns that it would not provide enough warning time to launch an effective counterattack. The Sixth Fleet is a numbered fleet of the United States Navy operating as part of United States Naval Forces Europe. The Sixth Fleet is headquartered at Naval Support Activity Naples, Italy. The officially stated mission of the Sixth Fleet in 2011 is that it "conducts the full range of Maritime Operations and Theater Security Cooperation missions, in concert with coalition, joint, interagency, and other parties, in order to advance security and stability in Europe and Africa." Four Power Naval Commission
The Four Power Naval Commission was created after World War II by the United States, France, Great Britain and the Soviet Union to dispose of elements of the Italian Fleet, and to provide for the return of warships the US and UK had loaned to the Soviet Union during the war. It was established by a Protocol signed at Paris on February 10, 1947, at the same time as the Treaty of Peace with Italy, whose Article 57 provided a mandate for the Commission. The Commission was constituted and began work on February 11. Among the issues it dealt with was Soviet reluctance to return warships to United States and the UK before it received "full clarity" regarding Italian warships it expected to receive. By Spring of 1949, a number of issues had been resolved and Captain R.F. Pryce, the U.S. representative, proposed that the Commission disband in early May, it appearing that remaining issues could be resolved through diplomatic channels.
