Freeport, Bahamas
Freeport is a city, district and free trade zone on the island of Grand Bahama of the northwest Bahamas. In 1955, Wallace Groves, a Virginian financier with lumber interests in Grand Bahama, was granted of pineyard with substantial areas of swamp and scrubland by the Bahamian government with a mandate to economically develop the area. Freeport has grown to become the second most populous city in the Bahamas. Australia's Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde defeated Great Britain's Neil Broad and Tim Henman in the final, 6–4, 6–4, 6–2 to win the gold medal in Men's Doubles tennis at the 1996 Summer Olympics. It was the fourth of five components the Woodies needed for the career Golden Slam; they would later win the French Open to complete the achievement. It was Australia's first official medal in the event, though Australian player Edwin Flack was a member of a mixed team that won bronze in the 1896 event. Caribbean Davis Cup Team
The Caribbean/West Indies men's national tennis team represented the nations of the West Indies in Davis Cup tennis competition from 1953–1987. History Caribbean/West Indies competed in its first Davis Cup in 1953. They won two of their 36 ties, defeating Venezuela to reach the semifinals of the American Zone in 1966, and defeating Cuba to reach the quarterfinals of American Zone Group I in 1987. In 1968 their 0-5 defeat (to the USA) was the beginning of the record for the 17 consecutive wins for the USA. Due to an ITLF (International Lawn Tennis Federation) ruling (in 1983) the West Indies, was no longer recognised as a Davis Cup team beyond 1987, as such four new teams were entered into the tournament over the next three years. The Davis Cup is the premier international team event in men's tennis. It is run by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and is contested annually between teams from competing countries in a knock-out format. It is described by the organisers as the "World Cup of Tennis", and the winners are referred to as the World Champion team. The competition began in 1900 as a challenge between Great Britain and the United States. By 2016, 135 nations entered teams into the competition. Mark Knowles
Mark Knowles (born 4 September 1971) is a Bahamian professional tennis coach and former professional tennis player, becoming the former number 1 in world as a specialist in doubles tennis. He won three of the four Grand Slam tournaments in men's doubles, partnering with Daniel Nestor, as well as Wimbledon in mixed doubles. At various times between 2002 and 2005 he was ranked World No. 1 in doubles. He is a five-time Olympian. Career Junior and college career After being awarded a scholarship to the Nick Bollettieri's famed academy at 10 years old, Knowles played junior tennis in his early years.
