Roger Sheaffe (politician)
Roger Hale Sheaffe (9 April 1838 – 1 December 1895) was a pastoralist and member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early days Sheaffe was born at Wollongong, New South Wales, to William Sheaffe, Captain in H.M. 50th Regiment, and his wife Rosalie (née Earle) and was educated at Wollongong Grammar School. Political career Sheaffe was elected to the Queensland Legislative Assembly as the member for Burke in 1878 but did not stand for re-election in 1883. He went on to be mayor of Sandgate in 1892. Personal life In 1874, Sheaffe married Isobel Maria Robertson in Wollongong and together had 3 sons and 1 daughter. Sheaffe died in Brisbane in 1895 and was buried in Toowong Cemetery Toowong Cemetery is a heritage-listed cemetery on the corner of Frederick Street and Mt Coot-tha Road, Toowong, City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Electoral District Of Burke
Burke was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland from 1873 to 1932, and again from 1960 to 1972. It covered remote rural areas in Northwest Queensland. It originally existed as a single-member district until 1888, when it was changed to a dual-member district. This was changed at the next election when it was split into two single electorates - Burke and Croydon. Burke was amalgamated into the district of Carpentaria from the 1932 election, but was revived for the 1960 election, until it was finally abolished at the 1972 election and renamed Mount Isa. The Parliament of Queensland is the legislature of Queensland, Australia. As provided under the Constitution of Queensland, the Parliament consists of the Monarch of Australia and the Legislative Assembly. It has been the only unicameral state legislature in the country since the upper chamber, the Legislative Council, was abolished in 1922. The Legislative Assembly sits in Parliament House in the state capital, Brisbane. All laws applicable in Queensland are authorised by the Parliament of Queensland, with the exception of specific legislation defined in the Constitution of Australia, very limited criminal law applying under the Australia Act 1986 as well as a small volume of remaining historical laws passed by the Parliament of New South Wales and the Imperial Parliament. Town Of Sandgate
The Town of Sandgate is a former local government area of Queensland, Australia, located in northern Brisbane adjacent to Moreton Bay. History Land in Sandgate became available in 1853, allowing a small seaside settlement to develop. By 1874, coach services connected Sandgate to Brisbane. The railway line from Brisbane to Sandgate opened in 1882. On 29 April 1880, Sandgate was proclaimed a municipality known as the Borough of Sandgate. The ''Local Authorities Act 1902'' replaced all Divisions and Boroughs with Towns and Shires, creating the Town of Sandgate on 31 March 1903. On 1 October 1925, it was amalgamated into the City of Brisbane. From its first settlement Sandgate relied on inadequate water supplies from tanks and the local lagoons. Many investigations into better water supplies were carried out over the years, but it was not until November, 1921, that Sandgate was connected to the Brisbane water supply system. Patrick O'Sullivan (Queensland Politician)
Patrick O'Sullivan (14 March 1818 – 29 February 1904) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography O'Sullivan was born in Castlemaine, County Kerry, the son of William O'Sullivan, a soldier, and his wife Ellen (née Moriarty). O'Sullivan was also a soldier, and was stationed in London with his regiment when Queen Victoria succeeded to the throne in 1837. In January the next year, however, he was sentenced to fifteen years transportation for assault, thus missing the coronation by several months.
