Roger Patterson (bassist)
Roger Patterson (November 29, 1968 – February 12, 1991) was an American bass player known for his work in the Florida technical death metal band Atheist. His playing style is characterized by its speed and complexity. Alex Webster, bassist with Cannibal Corpse, has acknowledged Patterson as "a big influence", describing his playing on the album ''Piece of Time'' as "phenomenal". Patterson joined Atheist (then known as R.A.V.A.G.E.) in 1985. The band recorded their first full-length album, ''Piece of Time,'' in 1988, but due to record company issues, it was not released until two years later. As a result, Atheist began preparing for their next album, to which Roger contributed greatly. Before recording, however, the band was in a car crash and Roger was killed, on February 12, 1991. Atheist would record and release their next album, ''Unquestionable Presence'', later that year and dedicate it to Roger's memory. ''Effigy of the Forgotten'' is the debut full-length album by New York City, New York-based death metal band Suffocation (band), Suffocation, released in 1991. The cover artwork was created by Dan Seagrave. Several of the tracks had appeared on earlier releases: "Reincremation" and "Involuntary Slaughter" were re-recorded from the ''Reincremation'' demo, while "Infecting the Crypts", "Mass Obliteration", and "Jesus Wept" appeared originally on the ''Human Waste'' EP. ''Human'' is the fourth studio album by American death metal band Death, released on October 22, 1991, by Relativity Records. The album marked the beginning of a major stylistic change for Death, being more technically complex and progressive than the band's previous efforts. The lyrics are more introspective when compared to the gore-based lyrics of ''Scream Bloody Gore'' and ''Leprosy'' or the social commentary on ''Spiritual Healing''. This new style would continue to evolve on all following Death albums. This is the only album to feature Cynic members Paul Masvidal on guitars and Sean Reinert on drums, both only 20 at that time, and the first to feature bassist Steve DiGiorgio. Technical Death Metal
Technical death metal (also referred to as tech-death) is a musical subgenre of death metal that began and developed in the early- to mid-1990s, with particular focus on challenging, demanding instrumental skill and complex songwriting. Technical experimentation in death metal began in the late 1980s and early 1990s by four bands that are often grouped together as "technical death metal's Big Four" – Death, Pestilence, Atheist, and Cynic – as well as Nocturnus; all but Pestilence being part of the Florida death metal scene. Some of the distinct features of this genre include dynamic song structures, complex and atypical rhythmic structures, abundant use of diminished chords and arpeggios, frequent employment of odd time chord progressions, and constant use of string skipping on the guitars.
