Roger Maddux
Roger Maddux (born 1948) is an American mathematician specializing in algebraic logic. He completed his B.A. at Pomona College in 1969, and his Ph.D. in mathematics at the University of California, Berkeley in 1978, where he was one of Alfred Tarski's last students. His career has been at Iowa State University, where he fills a joint appointment in computer science and mathematics. A mathematician is someone who uses an extensive knowledge of mathematics in their work, typically to solve mathematical problems. Mathematicians are concerned with numbers, data, quantity, structure, space, models, and change. History One of the earliest known mathematicians were Thales of Miletus (c. 624–c.546 BC); he has been hailed as the first true mathematician and the first known individual to whom a mathematical discovery has been attributed. He is credited with the first use of deductive reasoning applied to geometry, by deriving four corollaries to Thales' Theorem. Cylindric Algebra
In mathematics, the notion of cylindric algebra, invented by Alfred Tarski, arises naturally in the algebraization of first-order logic with equality. This is comparable to the role Boolean algebras play for propositional logic. Cylindric algebras are Boolean algebras equipped with additional cylindrification operations that model quantification and equality. They differ from polyadic algebras in that the latter do not model equality. Algebraic Logic
In mathematical logic, algebraic logic is the reasoning obtained by manipulating equations with free variables. What is now usually called classical algebraic logic focuses on the identification and algebraic description of models appropriate for the study of various logics (in the form of classes of algebras that constitute the algebraic semantics for these deductive systems) and connected problems like representation and duality. Well known results like the representation theorem for Boolean algebras and Stone duality fall under the umbrella of classical algebraic logic . In mathematics and abstract algebra, a relation algebra is a residuated Boolean algebra expanded with an involution called converse, a unary operation. The motivating example of a relation algebra is the algebra 2''X''² of all binary relations on a set ''X'', that is, subsets of the cartesian square ''X''2, with ''R''•''S'' interpreted as the usual composition of binary relations ''R'' and ''S'', and with the converse of ''R'' as the converse relation.
