Roger Lapointe
Roger Lapointe (born September 10, 1940) is a Canadian politician in the province of Quebec. He was a Liberal member of the National Assembly of Quebec from 1973 to 1976 and has been the mayor of Mont-Saint-Michel since 1997. Early life and career Lapointe was born in Ferme-Neuve, Quebec. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree (1961) and a teaching degree (1962) from the Université Laval, and in 1971 he earned a degree in educational administration from the Université de Montréal. Lapointe taught math and sciences in Mont-Laurier in the Commission scolaire Henri-Bourassa from 1962 to 1966, was coordinator of education from 1966 to 1970, and served as director of education from 1970 to 1973. Ferme-Neuve, Quebec
Ferme-Neuve (French for "New Farm") is a municipality part of the Antoine-Labelle Regional County Municipality, in the Laurentides (region), Laurentides region of Quebec, Canada. It is the largest incorporated municipality of the Laurentides region. The village is located on the shores of the Du Lièvre River and Journalists Lake, and along Quebec Route 309, about north of Mont-Laurier. History In the 19th century, the area began attracting loggers because of its rich red and white pine stands. In 1850, the James MacLaren logging company built a large tree farm called "La Ferme de la Montagne" that was used as a supply camp for loggers. It was sold in 1888 to Cyrille Lafontaine and inhabited by his son Léonard who became the first settler and farmer of Ferme-Neuve. In 1898, the Ferme-Neuve Post Office opened. 1973 Quebec General Election
The 1973 Quebec general election was held on October 29, 1973 to elect members to National Assembly of Quebec, Canada. The incumbent Quebec Liberal Party, led by Premier Robert Bourassa, won re-election, defeating the ''Parti Québécois'', led by René Lévesque, and the '' Union Nationale'' (UN). The Liberals won the largest majority government in the province's history, with 102 seats. In the process, they reduced the opposition to just eight seats (six PQ, two créditistes) in total. The ''Parti Québécois'' held its own, losing only one seat, and despite having fewer seats, became the official Opposition, although PQ leader René Lévesque failed to win a seat in the Assembly. Parti Québécois
The Parti Québécois (; ; PQ) is a sovereignist and social democratic provincial political party in Quebec, Canada. The PQ advocates national sovereignty for Quebec involving independence of the province of Quebec from Canada and establishing a sovereign state. The PQ has also promoted the possibility of maintaining a loose political and economic sovereignty-association between Quebec and Canada. The party traditionally has support from the labour movement, but unlike most other social democratic parties, its ties with organized labour are informal. In Westminster and other parliamentary systems, a backbencher is a member of parliament (MP) or a legislator who occupies no governmental office and is not a frontbench spokesperson in the Opposition, being instead simply a member of the "rank and file". The term dates from 1855. The term derives from the fact that they sit physically behind the frontbench in the House of Commons. A backbencher may be a new parliamentary member yet to receive high office, a senior figure dropped from government, someone who for whatever reason is not chosen to sit in the government or an opposition spokesperson (such as a shadow cabinet if one exists), or someone who prefers to be a background influence, not in the spotlight.
