Rodney Hall Plantation
Rodney Hall plantation was located near Hope Bay, Jamaica, Hope Bay in the Jamaican parish of Saint George Parish, Jamaica, Saint George in what is now Portland Parish. In 1809 it was in the ownership of Henry Passley who owned 140 slaves, the number rising to as high as 287 in the 1820s under different ownership. After Henry Passley, the plantation was owned by other Passleys, the Philips family, and in 1839 George Codrington (Jamaica), George Codrington. The Rodney Hall Workhouse was notorious amongst anti-slavery campaigners for its poor conditions. The name survives as a small community that is the location of the Rodney Hall Basic school. Portland Parish
Portland, with its capital town Port Antonio, is a parish located on Jamaica's northeast coast. It is situated to the north of St Thomas and to the east of St Mary in Surrey County. It is one of the rural areas of Jamaica, containing part of the Blue Mountains, where the Jamaican Maroon communities of Moore Town and Charles Town are located. Geography and demography The parish is situated at latitude 18°10' N and longitude 75°27'W. It extends from the highest peaks of the Blue Mountains, above sea level, down to the north coast, and is noted for its fertile soil, scenery, and beaches. George Ricardo Codrington (born 26 November 1966) is a Canadian former cricketer and former ODI captain, who played in five ODIs from 17 May 2006 to 21 August 2006. International career On his debut, he top scored for Canada with 45 not out against Bermuda. He also appeared in the 2005 ICC Trophy in Ireland. He is a right-hand batsman and right-arm medium-fast bowler. Plantations In Jamaica
A plantation is an agricultural estate, generally centered on a plantation house, meant for farming that specializes in cash crops, usually mainly planted with a single crop, with perhaps ancillary areas for vegetables for eating and so on. The crops that are grown include cotton, coffee, tea, cocoa, sugar cane, opium, sisal, oil seeds, oil palms, fruits, rubber trees and forest trees. Protectionist policies and natural comparative advantage have sometimes contributed to determining where plantations are located. In modern use the term is usually taken to refer only to large-scale estates, but in earlier periods, before about 1800, it was the usual term for a farm of any size in the southern parts of British North America, with, as Noah Webster noted, "farm" becoming the usual term from about Maryland northwards.
