Rodger McDaniel
Rodger McDaniel (born August 14, 1948) is an American politician from the state of Wyoming. He is a member of the Democratic Party. McDaniel has served in the Wyoming Senate and Wyoming House of Representatives. Career Rodger McDaniel was born in Leadville, Colorado, on August 14, 1948. He moved with his family to Cheyenne, Wyoming, as a small child. A lifelong Democrat and champion of Democratic causes, McDaniel served as the Wyoming Administrative Aide to U.S. Representative Teno Roncalio (D-WY) for several years prior to Rep. Roncalio's retirement. McDaniel was elected to the Wyoming State House of Representatives in 1971 at the age of 21. He went on to serve in the Wyoming Senate until 1981. In 1982, McDaniel ran unsuccessfully against U.S. Senator Malcolm Wallop (R-WY). During his tenure as a state legislator, McDaniel received the "Legislator of the Year" award. Wyoming Senate
The Wyoming Senate is the upper house of the Wyoming State Legislature. There are 30 Senators in the Senate, representing an equal number of constituencies across Wyoming, each with a population of at least 17,000. The Senate meets at the Wyoming State Capitol in Cheyenne. Members of the Senate serve four year terms without term limits. Term limits were declared unconstitutional by the Wyoming Supreme Court in 2004, overturning a decade-old law that had restricted Senators to three terms (twelve years). Like other upper houses of state and territorial legislatures and the federal U.S. Senate, the Wyoming Senate can confirm or reject gubernatorial appointments to the state cabinet, commissions, boards, or justices to the Wyoming Supreme Court. John P. Vinich was an American Democratic politician and attorney who served as a member of the Wyoming Legislature from 1975 to 1999. 1982 United States Senate Election In Wyoming
The 1982 United States Senate election in Wyoming took place on November 2, 1982. Incumbent Republican Senator Malcolm Wallop ran for his second term. He was challenged in the general election by former State Senator Rodger McDaniel, the Democratic nominee. Despite the strong national environment for Democratic candidates that year, Democratic Governor Edgar Herschler's landslide re-election, and the closeness of Wallop's campaign with former Democratic Senator Gale W. McGee in 1976, the contest between Wallop and McDaniel was largely non-competitive. Wallop won re-election by a wide margin, winning 57% of the vote to McDaniel's 43%. Classes Of United States Senators
The 100 seats in the United States Senate are divided into three classes for the purpose of determining which seats will be up for election in any two-year cycle, with only one class being up for election at a time. With senators being elected to fixed terms of six years, the classes allow about a third of the seats to be up for election in any presidential or midterm election year instead of having all 100 be up for election at the same time every six years. The seats are also divided in such a way that any given state's two senators are in different classes so that each seat's term ends in different years.
