Rocky Ryan (American Football)
John "Rocky" Ryan (July 5, 1932 – November 3, 2011) was an American professional football player who was a defensive back in the National Football League (NFL) in the late 1950s. Ryan played college football for the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He was selected in the second round of the 1954 NFL Draft, and played professionally for the Philadelphia Eagles and Chicago Bears of the NFL. Early years Ryan was born in Tolono, Illinois. He attended Unity High School in Tolono, Illinois from 1946 to 1950 and played both football and basketball. In addition, he won the Illinois State Pole Vault Title during the 1947–1948 school year. Ryan's pole vault championship assisted the high school track and field team in finishing tenth overall at the state meet. Defensive Back (American Football)
In gridiron football, defensive backs (DBs), also called the secondary, are the players on the defensive side of the ball who play farthest back from the line of scrimmage. They are distinguished from the other two sets of defensive players, the defensive linemen who play directly on the line of scrimmage, and the linebackers, who play in the middle of the defense, between the defensive line and the defensive backs. Among the defensive backs, there are two main types, cornerbacks, which play nearer the line of scrimmage and the sideline, whose main role is to cover the opposing team's wide receivers, and the safeties, who play further back near the center of the field, and who act as the last line of defense. 1954 NFL Draft
The 1954 National Football League Draft was held on January 28, 1954, at The Bellevue-Stratford Hotel in Philadelphia. This was the eighth year that the first overall pick was a bonus pick determined by lottery. With the previous seven winners ineligible from the draw, only the Baltimore Colts, Chicago Cardinals, Cleveland Browns, Green Bay Packers, and Pittsburgh Steelers had an equal chance of winning. The 1952 Rose Bowl was the 38th edition of the college football bowl game, played at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.
