Rockwood Village - Mississauga
Rockwood Village is a neighbourhood in the eastern part of the City of Mississauga, Ontario, in the Regional Municipality of Peel. Its approximate boundaries are Eglinton Avenue in the north, Burnhamthorpe Road in the south, the Etobicoke Creek (the city limits of Mississauga) on the east and Dixie Road on the west. The Municipal Ward is Ward 3, the Provincial Riding is Mississauga—Brampton South (provincial electoral district) and the Federal Riding is Mississauga—Brampton South. The Burnhamthorpe branch of the Mississauga Library System is located at the southwest corner of Burnhamthorpe and Dixie Roads. History The historic hamlet of Burnhamthorpe was located at the corner of today's Burnhamthorpe and Dixie Roads, at the southwestern edge of the neighbourhood. Mississauga Transitway
The Mississauga Transitway is a bus rapid transit (BRT) system in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. It comprises a series of purpose-constructed bus-only roadways, as well as reserved lanes on existing city streets and portions of Highway 403, that together form a continuous route spanning most of the city from Winston Churchill Boulevard in the west to the junction of Highways 401 and 427 in the east on the border with Toronto. Service on the Transitway is provided by MiWay and GO Transit, with some stations providing connections to Brampton Transit and Toronto Transit Commission bus services. Originally proposed in the 1970s, the Mississauga Transit plan has evolved over time. A minimum of eighteen studies were made between 1970 and 1992. Burnham Thorpe
Burnham Thorpe is a small village and civil parishes in England, civil parish on the River Burn, Norfolk, River Burn and near the coast of Norfolk, England. It is famous for being the birthplace of Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson, Horatio Nelson, victor at the Battle of Trafalgar and one of Britain's greatest heroes. At the time of his birth, Nelson's father, Edmund Nelson (clergyman), Edmund Nelson, was rector of the church in Burnham Thorpe. The house in which Nelson was born was demolished soon after his father's death, though the rectory that replaced it and the church at which his father preached can still be seen. The site of the former rectory is marked by a roadside plaque. The villages name means 'Homestead/village on the River Burn' or perhaps, 'hemmed-in land on the River Burn'. Chinguacousy Township, Ontario
Chinguacousy Township is a former municipality and present-day geographic township in the Regional Municipality of Peel, Ontario, Canada. In 1973, when Peel County became the Regional Municipality of Peel, the township was split in half, with the northern half becoming part of the town of Caledon, and the southern half, along with the township of Toronto Gore, joining the city of Brampton. Chinguacousy Township spanned from what now is Winston Churchill Boulevard to Airport Road, Olde Base Line Road to Steeles Avenue. Several villages were once located within Chinguacousy Township. In most cases only small remnants like churches and cemeteries of many of these former villages exist. Dundas Street is a major historic arterial road in Ontario, Canada. The road connects the city of Toronto with its western suburbs and several cities in southwestern Ontario. History and layout Most major roads in Mississauga are concession roads laid out in the early 19th Century, when much of the city was known as Toronto Township. East-west roads were historically called concessions, while north–south roads were called lines (with two and parts of a third still bearing that designation). East-west roads were surveyed from Dundas Street and (with the exception of Lakeshore Road) divided by Hurontario Street as East or West (e.g. Dundas Street East and Dundas Street West), while north–south roads were surveyed from Hurontario Street, although these streets are ''not'' divided into North or South sections. Etobicoke Creek is a river in the Greater Toronto Area of Ontario, Canada. It is a tributary of Lake Ontario and runs from Caledon, Ontario, Caledon to southern Etobicoke, part of the City of Toronto. The creek is within the jurisdiction of the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority. Etymology The name "Etobicoke" was derived from the Mississaugas, Mississauga word ''wah-do-be-kang'' (''wadoopikaang''), meaning "place where the alders grow", which was used to describe the area between Etobicoke Creek and the Humber River (Toronto), Humber River. The first provincial land surveyor, Augustus Jones, also spelled it as "ato-be-coake". A letter from January 22, 1775 uses "Tobacock".
