Rockwell Mixed Pairs
The Rockwell Mixed Pairs is a national bridge championship held regularly at the Spring American Contract Bridge League (ACBL) North American Bridge Championship (NABC). The Rockwell Trophy, donated by Helen Rockwell in 1946, is presented to the winners. Originally contested at the Fall NABC, the event was moved to the Spring NABC in 1986. The event is a four-session matchpoint (MP) pairs event with two qualifying and two final sessions; each pair consists of one male and one female player. Winners Five pairs have won twice: * John Crawford and Margaret Wagar, who won in 1948 and successfully defended in 1949; they also finished second in 1947. Crawford also won with Dorothy Hayden in 1959. * Sidney Silodor and Helen Sobel, who won in 1955 and successfully defended in 1956. Silodor also won with Edith Rosenbloom in 1941. * Barry Crane and Kerri Sanborn (then Shuman) won in 1975 and 1982. American Contract Bridge League
The American Contract Bridge League (ACBL) is a governing body for contract bridge in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Bermuda. It is the largest such organization in North America having the stated mission ''"to promote, grow and sustain the game of bridge and serve the bridge-related interests of our Members."'' Eric Murray (bridge)
Eric R. Murray (31 August 1928 in Hamilton, Ontario – 19 May 2018) was a Canadian contract bridge player and co-founder of the Canadian Bridge Federation (CBF). He and his long-time regular partner Sami Kehela were considered two of the best Canadian players in the history of the game. The Eric R. Murray Trophy, named in his honour, is awarded to the open team representing Canada in the quadrennial World Team Olympiad (continued after 2004 as part of the World Mind Sports Games). Murray was one of "four young bridge experts led by Robert F. Jordan" who won the annual Vanderbilt Cup in 1961, when it was contested in a 64- double-elimination tournament. Murray was already a Toronto lawyer; his bridge partner Charles Coon was manager of the Boston Chess Club. Sidney Lazard
Sidney Herold Lazard (December 18, 1930 – November 3, 2015) was an American business leader in the oil and gas industries and a champion contract bridge player. He attended Tulane University and was a lifelong New Orleans resident until 2001, when he moved to Dallas, Texas. Lazard was inducted into the ACBL Hall of Fame in 2000. Sidney H. Howard Schenken
Howard Schenken (September 28, 1903 – February 20, 1979) was an American bridge player, writer, and long-time syndicated bridge columnist. He was from New York City. He won three Bermuda Bowl titles, and set several North American records. Most remarkably he won the Life Master Pairs five times, the Spingold twelve, and the Vanderbilt Trophy ten times; the LM Pairs and Vanderbilt records that still stand today. Schenken is ACBL Life Master number 3, dating from 1936. He was named to the bridge hall of fame by ''The Bridge World'' in 1966, which brought the number of members to nine, all made founding members of the ACBL Hall of Fame in 1995. Agnes Gordon
Agnes Leslie Gordon (''née'' Willson, April 25, 1906 – May 24, 1967) was a Canadian bridge player. She was born in Ridgetown, Ontario and graduated from the University of Ontario. She moved to Buffalo, New York after her marriage in 1930, although she remained a Canadian citizen. At the North American Bridge Championships meet in November–December 1963 (then called "Fall Nationals"), Gordon and Eric Murray won the premier annual championship of the North America, the Rockwell Mixed Pairs. Their score in the final session, 506.5 of 650 top, or 78%, is the highest single-session score in the history of national-level ACBL pairs competition (at least, it was from the 1930s to 2009). During the same 16-day meet, Gordon and Helen Portugal tied for first place among eight pairs in trials to play on the USA women team in May 1964. George Rapée
George Nicholas Rapée (May 22, 1915 – April 1, 1999) was an American bridge player. From 1942 to 1980 he was the most successful player in the American Contract Bridge League (ACBL) in its three most important tournaments, the Vanderbilt, Spingold, and Reisinger. He played on the American teams that won the first three Bermuda Bowls, 1950 to 1953. Life Rapée was born and raised in New York City. His parents were from Hungary; his father Erno Rapée was a concert pianist and orchestra conductor. He earned bachelor's and law degrees at New York University and served in the US Army for three years during World War II.
