Rockingham Road, Perth
Rockingham Road is a major road between Fremantle and Kwinana in the southern suburbs of Perth. It is allocated National Route 1 – part of Australia's national Highway 1 – between Stock Road in Munster and its southern terminus in Kwinana. The first part of Rockingham Road is a main road and suburban distributor that goes from the southern edge of Fremantle into Hamilton Hill and Spearwood, passing the Phoenix Park shopping centre and the offices of the City of Cockburn. It then leaves the urban area (but not the metropolitan area). After becoming Highway 1, Rockingham Road acquires a very wide median strip - at one point the northbound and southbound lanes are 180 metres apart. The road then passes the small towns of Wattleup and Hope Valley before entering the Kwinana heavy industrial area in Naval Base and Kwinana Beach. Lake Coogee is a suburb of Perth, Western Australia, located within the City of Cockburn, and named after Lake Coogee, located within the suburb. History In 2019, the City of Cockburn approved a split of the suburb of Munster, Western Australia, Munster, whereby the north-western part of the suburb became the new suburb of Lake Coogee, while another part, in the south-west, was added to the suburb of Henderson, Western Australia, Henderson. Only the eastern part of Munster remained part of the existing suburb. The changes came into effect on 30 March 2020. Prior to being part of the suburb of Munster from 1954, the district had been known as ''South Coogee'' since the 1870s and this earlier name remains in use by older settlers of the area. Beeliar is a suburb of Perth, Western Australia, located within the City of Cockburn. The name refers to the Beeliar people, a group of Aboriginal Australians who had land rights over the southern half of Perth's metropolitan area. The suburb contains the Thomsons Lake Nature Reserve. "Beeliar" is a Noongar word that translates to "river" or "water running through". The suburb was named after an early settler-colonialist, Robert Menli Lyon, who recorded and interacted with the local Aboriginal group in the area circa the nineteenth century. Before European contact, the suburb was occupied by the Beeliar group of the Whadjuk nation, who are part of the broader Noongar language region. The Noongar peoples have Dreaming stories related to the creation of the landforms in Beeliar and had lore that outlined the maintenance and care of the land. Beeliar Drive is a major arterial road in the southwestern part of the Perth Metropolitan Area. It provides an important and unbroken east-west link between Kwinana Freeway and Stock Road providing access to residential developments in Beeliar, Yangebup and Lake Coogee in the west to commercial and industrial development in Cockburn Central, Jandakot and Success in the east. Right-in/right-out (RIRO) and left-in/left-out (LILO) refer to a type of three-way road intersection where turning movements of vehicles are restricted. A RIRO permits only right turns and a LILO permits only left turns. The City of Fremantle is a local government area in the south of Perth, Western Australia. The City covers an area of , and lies about southwest of the Perth central business district. History The City of Fremantle is named after Charles Fremantle, who in 1829 claimed for George IV "all that part of New Holland (Australia) which is not included within the territory of New South Wales", but who was also charged just three years earlier in April 1826 with raping a 15-year-old girl.
