Rockhampton Cemetery
South Rockhampton Cemetery is a heritage-listed cemetery at Upper Dawson Road, Allenstown, Rockhampton Region, Queensland, Australia. It was built from 1860 to 1970. It is also known as Dawson Road Cemetery and Rockhampton Cemetery. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 15 February 1993. History The South Rockhampton (Dawson Road) Cemetery was surveyed in May 1860 as the town's first official general cemetery, encompassing less than half its present area, and fronting the Dawson (now Lower Dawson) Road. The 1858 Rockhampton town plan had made no provision for a public cemetery and, prior to c. 1860, burials took place near the Fitzroy River, between Albert and North Streets. The Dawson Road cemetery, sited on a principal arterial road out of early Rockhampton, was established when the population numbered less than 1,000, and just five years after the first settlers had arrived in the area in 1855. John Cani
John Cani, also known as Giovanni Cani (22 December 1836 – 3 March 1898) was a Roman Catholic Bishop of Rockhampton. Early life Cani was born at Castel Bolognese, Province of Ravenna, Italy, and educated in his native province and at the Sapienza University of Rome, where he graduated D.D. and LL.D. Religious life He was ordained a priest in 1859, and accompanied the first Roman Catholic Bishop of Brisbane, Dr. James Quinn, to Queensland. He was appointed parish priest at Warwick, Queensland in the same year, and went to Brisbane in 1868. Ten years later Dr. Cani was made Pro-Vicar Apostolic of Northern Queensland. On the death of Bishop Quinn, the diocese of Brisbane was divided into two and Dr. Cani was appointed, by papal brief, Bishop of Rockhampton, and was consecrated in St. Mary's Cathedral, Sydney, by Archbishop Roger Vaughan, on 21 May 1882. Sydney Davis (Australian Politician)
Sydney Bevan Davis (1829–1884) was a pastoralist and politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life Sydney Bevan Davis was born in Dorsetshire, England, in 1829, the second son of Lieutenant-Colonel John Davis, of the Dorsetshire Militia, who for many years was Master of Foxhounds for Queen Victoria. Sydney Davis was a lieutenant in his father's regiment. He was educated at the University of Oxford. He immigrated to Queensland in 1861 with considerable capital that he invested in a pastoral property at Peak Downs called ''Peak Vale Station'' and also had an interest in the ''Craven Downs Station''. Politics Under the Additional Members Act 1864, the seats of Clermont, Kennedy, Maryborough, Mitchell, Rockhampton and Warrego were created. Allenstown, Queensland
Allenstown is a suburb of Rockhampton, Rockhampton Region, Queensland, Australia. It is situated by road south-west of the Rockhampton CBD. In the , Allenstown had a population of 2,790 people. Geography The main business precinct of Allenstown is anchored by local shopping centre Allenstown Square, which was previously known as Allenstown Plaza before undergoing a major refurbishment and extension which was completed in 2012. History The suburb is named after William Allen, builder, around 1862. Allen's decision to sell blocks of land for thirty pounds following his return from the Canoona gold rush, which saw many new cottages being built, prompted the locals to dub the suburb "Allen's town". In 1864, Patrick Egan established the Merry Jig Hotel. In December 1870, tenders were called from carpenters to erect a Wesleyan Methodist church in Allenstown. Edward Palmer (8 March 1842 – 3 May 1899) was an Australian pastoralist (so-called 'Squatter'), public servant and conservative Queensland politician. Palmer was born in Sydney. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland for Burke 1883 to 1888, member for Carpentaria 1888-1893 and Flinders from 1889 to 1896. He was a supporter of Thomas McIlwraith. Francis Hodgson Nixon
Francis Hodgson Nixon (1832 – 5 November 1883) was an Australian architect and newspaper owner and editor. He also wrote under the pseudonym of Peter Perfume. Early life Francis Hodgson Nixon was the son of Captain Nixon, Royal Navy, and received a liberal education in England. Career In 1846, Nixon became a pupil of the London-based Architect and Surveyor, William Wallen junior. In 1852, Nixon immigrated to Victoria where he was engaged as an architect, reportedly "having duly accredited certificates, in superintending the erection of government buildings in the Ovens—Beechworth district". Although Nixon advertised as: “Architect and Surveyor, Articled pupil of Mr. William Wallen Jnr., London and Greenwich”, his indenture agreement had been annulled, by mutual consent, on 22 June 1849. Francis Reid "Frank" Murphy (27 March 1844 - 24 January 1892) was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. He represented the seat of Barcoo from 1885 to 1892. Charles Melbourne
Charles Sydney Dick Melbourne (3 June 1838 - 23 September 1891) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Council. Melbourne was born in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia in 1838 to Alexander Dick Melbourne and his wife Charlotte (née Hutchinson). He was appointed to the Queensland Legislative Council in 1878 and served for seven years before resigning in 1885. John MacFarlane (Queensland Politician)
John MacFarlane (1823 – 10 April 1880) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography MacFarlane was born in Glasgow, Scotland, the son of David Macfarlane and his wife Margaret (née Gibb). He arrived in Victoria around 1840 where he engaged in Squatting pursuits. In 1865 he moved to Queensland and as a member of a Victorian firm, took up Oakey Creek run on the Mackenzie River in Central Queensland. Like most stations in the area it proved unsuitable for sheep and after four years he moved to Rockhampton where he established a successful stock and station agent. James Larcombe
James Larcombe (1884–1957) was a Labor politician from Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life James Larcombe was born in Rockhampton, Queensland on 25 April 1884. His father, also named James Larcombe, was a butcher, and his mother was Mary (née Lee). He was educated at the Jenkins private school in Rockhampton. As a young man, he worked as a butcher with his father and was active in the local labor movement. Politics At the 1912 election, he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Queensland to represent the newly created electoral district of Keppel. While the MLA for Keppel, he was a minister without portfolio from 9 September 1919 to 22 October 1919. Then he was appointed as Secretary for Public Works from 22 October 1919 to 7 April 1920. William Frederick Lambert
William Frederick Lambert (December 1834 – 20 August 1908) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Council. Lambert was born in Ballyvolane, County Cork, Ireland in 1834 to William Lambert and his wife Eliza (née Furlong). He arrived in Australia in 1858 and by 1866 he had founded the Laurel Bank Boiling Down Works in Rockhampton, Queensland. Lambert was appointed to the Queensland Legislative Council in 1872 and served for over twenty nine years before resigning in 1901.
