Greatest Hits Radio (Lancashire) is an Independent Local Radio station based in Manchester, England, owned and operated by Bauer as part of the Greatest Hits Radio network. It broadcasts to Lancashire and North West England. As of June 2022, the station has a weekly audience of 23,000 listeners according to RAJAR. History The radio station launched as Red Rose Radio on 5 October 1982 at 6:00am on 301 metres medium wave (999 kHz) and 97.3 VHF stereo, broadcasting from a converted church ( St Paul's) at St. Pauls Square in Preston, Lancashire. The station's first presenter on air was Dave Lincoln - the first record played was "Evergreen" by Barbra Streisand. Other early presenters on the station included Dave Lincoln, Allan Beswick, Sally Moon, Derek Webster, Keith Macklin, Russell Harty and Steve Collins. Lancashire ( , ; abbreviated Lancs) is the name of a historic county, ceremonial county, and non-metropolitan county in North West England. The boundaries of these three areas differ significantly. The non-metropolitan county of Lancashire was created by the Local Government Act 1972. It is administered by Lancashire County Council, based in Preston, and twelve district councils. Preston () is a city on the north bank of the River Ribble in Lancashire, England. Career Lamont was educated at Greenock Academy, the University of Glasgow, the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland) and Jordanhill College of Education, where he trained as a secondary school teacher. He started his career working as a trainee manager for the Clydesdale Bank before joining Scottish Opera in 1980. John Myers (11 April 1959 – 1 June 2019) was a British radio executive, consultant and presenter. He was Chairman of the UK Radio Academy Awards, The Commercial Radio Awards and owner of Myers Media. Myers developed the Century Radio brand for Border Radio Holdings in the early 1990s, launching two more stations later in the decade. He presented programmes under the pseudonym "John Morgan". He then became Chief executive of GMG Radio, developing the Real Radio, Smooth Radio and Rock Radio brands and overseeing GMG Radio's acquisition of the Century network from GCap Media. Trans World Communications (or TWC for short) was the investment vehicle of businessman Owen Oyston. It operated radio stations and played a part in the Miss World Beauty Pageant. About Initially called The Red Rose Group because of its beginnings at Red Rose Radio in Preston, Trans World went on to purchase Radio Aire in Leeds, Red Dragon Radio in Cardiff and Piccadilly Radio in Manchester to form the UK's first radio group. St Paul's Church, Preston, Lancashire
St Paul's Church is a redundant Anglican parish church in St Paul's Square, Preston, Lancashire, England. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building. It was a Commissioners' church, having received a grant towards its construction from the Church Building Commission. The building also housed radio station Rock FM from 1981 to 2020. History St Paul's was built between 1823 and 1825, and was designed by Thomas Rickman and Henry Hutchinson. A grant of £6,221 () was given towards its construction by the Church Building Commission. In 1882 a chancel was added to the church, and a baptistery was created within the church, by T. H. Myers. The church was declared redundant on 1 January 1979. In 1981 it was bought for £35,000 by Red Rose Radio who spent £780,000 to convert it into a radio station. The conversion was carried out by Sandy Brown Associates.
