Rocca Barbena is a high mountain in the Ligurian Prealps (part of the Ligurian Alps) in Italy. __NOTOC__ Geography The mountain is located on the main chain of the Alps and dominates from North Castelvecchio di Rocca Barbena. Its northern cliffs face on Bardineto and Bormida valley. The summit stands on the water divide between Ligurian Sea and River Po basins. Castelvecchio Di Rocca Barbena
Castelvecchio di Rocca Barbena ( lij, Castrevëgio) is a ''comune'' (municipality) in the Province of Savona in the Italian region Liguria, located about southwest of Genoa and about southwest of Savona. Geography Castelvecchio di Rocca Barbena borders the following municipalities: Balestrino, Bardineto, Erli, Garessio, Toirano, and Zuccarello. The village gets its name from a nearby mountain called Rocca Barbena. History In the 12th and 13th centuries, Castelvecchio was part of the fiefdom of the Marquis of Clavesana. Gradually it lost importance as the centre of local feudal power shifted to the nearby fief of Zuccarello. In 1623 Castelvecchio was acquired by the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia under the House of Savoy. After the castle was besieged in 1672, the Castelvecchio was ceded to the Republic of Genoa. Giogo Di Toirano
The Giogo di Toirano (801 m) is a mountain pass in the Province of Savona (Italy). It connects Toirano with Bardineto. Toponimy In Italian the main meaning of ''giogo'' is ''yoke'', but it also means ''gap'', ''mountain pass''; Toirano is a village on the southern side of the pass. Geography The pass stands between Monte Sebanco (983.9 m, West) and Bric Pagliarina (1.213 m, a subpeak of Monte Carmo). Located on the main chain of the Alps it connects the basin of the Ligurian Sea (South of the pass) and the Po plain. Its northern side is mainly occupied by beech woods, while the southern side is drier and warmer. A ponor is a natural opening where surface water enters into underground passages; they may be found in karst landscapes where the geology and the geomorphology is typically dominated by porous limestone rock. Karst
Karst is a topography formed from the dissolution of soluble rocks such as limestone, dolomite, and gypsum. It is characterized by underground drainage systems with sinkholes and caves. It has also been documented for more weathering-resistant rocks, such as quartzite, given the right conditions. Subterranean drainage may limit surface water, with few to no rivers or lakes. The ''Alta Via dei Monti Liguri'' (AV, literally "High Route of the Ligurian Mountains") is a long-distance waymarked hiking trail in the Italian region of Liguria. Trail blazing or way marking is the practice of marking paths in outdoor recreational areas with signs or markings that follow each other at certain, though not necessarily exactly defined, distances and mark the direction of the trail. A summit book or summit register is a record of visitors to the summit of a mountain. It is usually enclosed in a weatherproof, animalproof metal canister. Some books are maintained in an informal manner by an individual or small group, while others are maintained by a club. Well known and often climbed peaks, such as those on peak bagging lists, are more likely to have summit books. On the other hand, mountains which are very heavily climbed or have popular trails up, such as Mount Whitney or Ben Nevis, may not have registers, or may have a daily log book that is changed out often.
