''RoboCop'' is a 1987 American science fiction action film directed by Paul Verhoeven and written by Edward Neumeier and Michael Miner. The film stars Peter Weller, Nancy Allen, Daniel O'Herlihy, Ronny Cox, Kurtwood Smith, and Miguel Ferrer. Set in a crime-ridden Detroit, in the near future, ''RoboCop'' centers on police officer Alex Murphy (Weller) who is murdered by a gang of criminals and subsequently revived by the megacorporation Omni Consumer Products as the cyborg law enforcer RoboCop. Unaware of his former life, RoboCop executes a brutal campaign against crime while coming to terms with the lingering fragments of his humanity. The film was conceived by Neumeier while working on the set of ''Blade Runner'' (1982), and he developed the idea further with Miner. Their script was purchased in early 1985 by producer Jon Davison on behalf of Orion Pictures. Paul Verhoeven (; born 18 July 1938) is a Dutch director, producer and screenwriter, active in the Netherlands, France and the United States. His blending of graphic violence and sexual content with social satire is a trademark of both his drama and science fiction films. After receiving attention for the TV series '' Floris'' in his native Netherlands, Verhoeven got his film breakthrough with romantic drama ''Turkish Delight'' (1973), starring frequent collaborator Rutger Hauer. The film was nominated for Academy Award for Best Foreign Film and later received the award for Best Dutch Film of the Century at the Netherlands Film Festival. Officer Alex James Murphy ( designation number: OCP Crime Prevention Unit 001), commonly known as RoboCop, is a fictional cybernetically-enhanced Detroit Police Department officer from Murfreesboro, Tennessee and is the main protagonist in the film series of the same name. Murphy is killed in the line of duty; subsequently, Murphy is resurrected and transformed into the cyborg law enforcement unit RoboCop by the megacorporation, Omni Consumer Products (OCP). In the original screenplay, he is referred to as Robo by creators Edward Neumeier and Michael Miner. Concept and creation Edward Neumeier's script and idea were rejected by many studios, and the name was thought as an "unsuitable" movie.
