Champion is an unincorporated community in the town of Green Bay in Brown County, Wisconsin, United States. It is part of the Green Bay Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town hall for the town of Green Bay is located in Champion and the National Shrine of Our Lady of Champion is located just east of Champion. History The area was called "''Grez-Daems''", from 1853 to 1862, named after Belgian priest Father Daems, who is credited with being the founder of the Belgian Colony in Wisconsin. In 1862, the community became known as "''Aux Premiers Belges''" (The First Belgians). The same area was also known as “Robinsonville”, after Charles D. National Shrine Of Our Lady Of Champion
The National Shrine of Our Lady of Champion, formerly dedicated as the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help, is a Catholic shrine to Mary, mother of God located within the Diocese of Green Bay in the United States. The chapel is in the Champion section of the town of Green Bay, about 16 miles (26 km) northeast of downtown Green Bay proper. It stands on the site of the reported apparition of Mary to a Belgian-born woman, Adele Brise, in 1859. The apparition was formally approved on December 8, 2010, by Bishop David L. Ricken, becoming the first Marian apparition approved by the Catholic Church in the United States. Bishop Ricken also approved the chapel as a diocesan shrine, recognizing its long history as a place of pilgrimage and prayer. On August 15, 2016, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops designated the shrine as a national shrine. Peshtigo Fire
The Peshtigo fire was a large forest fire on October 8, 1871, in northeastern Wisconsin, United States, including much of the southern half of the Door Peninsula and adjacent parts of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The largest community in the affected area was Peshtigo, Wisconsin, which had a population of approximately 1,700 residents. The fire burned about and is the deadliest wildfire in recorded history, with the number of deaths estimated between 1,500 and 2,500. The exact number of deaths is debated. Data from mass graves, both those already exhumed and those still being discovered, show that the death toll of the blaze was most likely greater than the 1889 Johnstown flood death toll of 2,200 people or more. Jean-Pierre Pernin (February 22, 1822 – October 9, 1909), also known as Peter Pernin in America, was a French people, French Roman Catholic priest, who came to the United States in 1864 as a missionary, working in Illinois, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. Grégoire Dupont
Grégoire Joseph Dupont (December 18, 1842 – July 1, 1917) was a Belgian-American politician. He served in the Wisconsin State Assembly in 1887, representing Brown County's first district. Biography Dupont was born in Belgium in 1842, and immigrated to Wisconsin in 1855. He married fellow Belgian Julie Henrion at Bay Settlement, Wisconsin, in 1862, and they had nine children together. At various points in his life, Dupont was occupied as a shingle mill laborer, photographer and farmer. He lived in Robinsonville, Wisconsin. Dupont was a member of the 18th Wisconsin Infantry in the American Civil War. He served in the Wisconsin State Assembly in 1887 as the representative for northeastern Brown County.
