Robin Benson
Robert Henry "Robin" Benson (24 September 1850 – 7 April 1929) was an English merchant banker and art collector. As an amateur footballer, he was a member of the Oxford University A.F.C., Oxford University football team which won the FA Cup in 1874 FA Cup Final, 1874. Family and education Benson was born on 24 September 1850 at Fairfield House, Fairfield, Tameside, Fairfield, near Manchester, the eldest of three children of Robert Benson (1814–1875), a merchant, and his wife, Eleanor Sara née Moorsom (1824–1883), the daughter of Vice-Admiral Constantine Moorsom. He was baptised at St Stephen's church, Audenshaw on 1 November 1850. Benson was educated at Eton College, from where he Matriculation, matriculated on 21 October 1869, before going up to Balliol College, Oxford. John Hawtrey
John Purvis Hawtrey (19 July 1850 – 17 August 1925) was an English amateur footballer who earned two caps for the national team in 1881 playing as a goalkeeper. Career His football career started with Remnants F.C. and he later played for Old Etonians, with whom he won the FA Cup in 1879. His international appearances both came in 1881, against Wales and Scotland. England lost both games and Hawtrey conceded a total of seven goals. Thomas Astley Hamond
Thomas Astley Horace Hamond (17 August 1845 – 5 February 1917) was an association football player and solicitor, who won an FA Cup runner-up medal in 1875. Personal life Hamond was born in Swaffham in Norfolk, the son of Anthony Hamond, who was lord of the manor of West Acre in the county. He attended Eton College and played in first-choice elevens in both codes of Etonian football - for the Field XI and the Oppidan side in the Wall Game in 1863. Team-mates in both sides included future Old Etonian players Edgar Lubbock and Quintin Hogg. Hamond matriculated at Magdalene College, Cambridge in 1864, and was awarded his degree in 1868. He was awarded a Distinction in his Law Society finals in 1870 and became a solicitor, practising in Lincoln's Inn fields, eventually inheriting the lordship of the manor. 1875 FA Cup Final
The 1875 FA Cup Final was a football match between Royal Engineers and Old Etonians on 13 March 1875 at Kennington Oval in London. It was the fourth final of the world's oldest football competition, the Football Association Challenge Cup (known in the modern era as the FA Cup). Heading into the final, the Royal Engineers were playing in their third final after losing the 1872 and 1874 finals while the Old Etonians were playing in their first FA Cup final. Prior to the final, the Royal Engineers had played one more match than the Old Etonians with the Etonians getting a bye in the second round due to the odd number of the teams that had entered the tournament. 2,000 people saw the match which ended in a 1–1 draw, Henry Renny-Tailyour scored for the Engineers but Alexander Bonsor replied to have the match end in a draw and have the final being replayed for the first time with two goals from Renny-Tailyour sealing the Royal Engineers' first and only FA Cup title. A varsity match is a fixture (especially of a sporting event or team) between two university teams, particularly Oxford and Cambridge. The Scottish Varsity rugby match between the University of St Andrews and the University of Edinburgh at Murrayfield stadium is claimed to be the oldest recurring varsity match in the world, having been played since the 1860s. It is predated by the University Match in Cricket between Oxford and Cambridge, which was first played in 1827.
