Robertson Ministry (1877)
The fourth Robertson ministry was the seventeenth ministry of the Colony of New South Wales, and was led by Sir John Robertson. It was the fourth of five occasions that Robertson led the Government. Robertson was elected in the first free elections for the New South Wales Legislative Assembly held in March 1856. The title of Premier was widely used to refer to the Leader of Government, but not enshrined in formal use until 1920. There was no party system in New South Wales politics until 1887. The 1874–75 election had resulted in a challenging environment. Robertson was the leader of the government until March 1877 when he was unable to obtain supply and resigned, replaced by Henry Parkes. The Parkes government however only lasted until 16 August 1877, when Parkes was in turn unable to obtain supply and resigned to be replaced by Robertson. John Davies (New South Wales Politician)
John Davies (2 March 1839 – 23 May 1896), was a member of the Parliament of New South Wales. Davies was born in Sydney, the son of John Davies, of New South Wales. In 1861 he married Miss Elisabeth Eaton. Starting in business as an ironmonger and general blacksmith, he commenced to take an active part in politics on the Liberal side as soon as he was of age. On 1 December 1874 he was elected an alderman for the City of Sydney, serving as an alderman until 1882. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly as one of four members for East Sydney at the election on 9 December 1874, representing this seat until 1880. He was Postmaster-General in the Robertson Government from August to December 1877. Archibald Jacob
Archibald Hamilton Jacob (31 July 182928 May 1900) was a politician in the colony of New South Wales. He served nearly thirty years in the lower and upper houses of the colonial government, as both elected and appointed representative, government minister and Chairman of Committees of the New South Wales Legislative Council. Jacob was born in Jessore, in the Bengal Presidency of British India (now in Bangladesh). He was the second surviving son of Captain Vickers Jacob (1789–1836), who was the oldest son of twelve children of Dr John Jacob of Ballinakill and Dublin, Ireland. Jacob's mother was Anne, ''née'' Watson (1796–1836) from Nottingham, England, who was a daughter of Major Watson of the East India Company Presidency armies. Ezekiel Baker (politician)
Ezekiel Alexander Baker (1 December 1823 – 28 January 1912) was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly. Baker was born in Middlesex, England, to Ezekiel John Baker and Elizabeth, . He trained in his father's business of manufacturing firearms and also studied mineralogy and mining. He emigrated to New South Wales in 1853 as mineralogist to a mining company. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly for Goldfields South at the 1869-70 election, and was also a member of the Goldfields Committee. In June 1870 he was appointed to a Royal Commission into the goldfields and water supply. His seat was declared vacant in November 1870 as he had accepted an office of profit under the crown. He comfortably regained it at the by-election in December 1870. He retained the seat at the elections in 1872, and 1875. Thomas Garrett (Australian Politician)
Thomas Garrett (16 July 183025 November 1891) was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly, newspaper proprietor and land agent. Early life Garrett was born in Liverpool, England to John Garrett and Sarah, and went to New South Wales with his parents when nine years of age. A year later he was bound to the printing business, but during his apprenticeship he ran away, and became a cabin-boy on H.M.S. ''Fly'', then employed in resurveying the coast between Port Jackson and Hobson's Bay. The youth was soon sent back, and having finished his apprenticeship, he was engaged on a number of newspapers, subsequently being employed in the Government printing office, where he worked for three years. William Long (New South Wales Politician)
William Alexander Long (28 July 1839 – 30 November 1915) was a race-horse owner and politician in New South Wales, Colonial Treasurer in 1877. Long was born in Sydney, New South Wales, the son of William Long (1797–1876) and his second wife. Long was educated privately and studied law in England, he was called to the Bar of the Inner Temple on 11 June 1862 and admitted to the New South Wales Bar on 22 December 1862. Long represented Central Cumberland from 30 June 1875 to 12 October 1877, and Parramatta from 27 October 1877 to 9 November 1880, in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly. He was nominated to the New South Wales Legislative Council on 8 September 1885, a position he held until 17 March 1900. John Lackey (Australian Politician)
Sir John Lackey (6 October 1830 – 11 November 1903) was a magistrate and politician in colonial New South Wales, President of the New South Wales Legislative Council 1892 to 1903. Early life Lackey was born in Sydney, New South Wales, son of William Lackey and his second wife Mary, O'Dowd. His grandfather was a wealthy publican and paid for his education Lackey was educated at the Sydney College, subsequently adopting pastoral pursuits in the Parramatta district.
