Roberts Projects
Roberts Projects is a contemporary art gallery located in Los Angeles. History Roberts Projects was founded in 1999 as Roberts & Tilton by partners Bennett Roberts, Julie Roberts and Jack Tilton in Los Angeles. Following the death of Jack Tilton (1951– 2017), the gallery changed its name to Roberts Projects on January 1, 2018. Roberts & Tilton opened its first space in 2000 at the 6150 Wilshire gallery complex located in the Miracle Mile section of LA, a focal place for viewing art in the early 2000's. From 2008 through 2022 Roberts Projects occupied a former coffee-roasting factory in Culver City. In August 2020, Roberts Projects was elected as a member of the Art Dealers Association of America. Roberts Projects relocated in January 2023 to 442 South La Brea Avenue, renovating a 10,000 square foot historic automobile showroom space that was once a Max Barish car dealership. Jack Tilton
John Havemeyer Tilton Jr (April 25, 1951 – May 6, 2017) was an American art dealer, based in New York City. He was born in Littleton, New Hampshire, the son of a father who had studied art at Yale University, designed Christmas cards, and served for many years in the New Hampshire Legislature. He was educated at Tilton School (no family connection) and received a bachelor's degree in business from Babson College in 1974. Next, after taking some graduate courses in business at the University of New Hampshire with a direction towards banking, he withdrew from his studies. He then set forth to New York City where a family friend, Betty Parsons, who was known for her early championing of the Abstract Expressionists, including Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko, had her renowned gallery on 57th Street in Manhattan. Betye Irene Saar (born July 30, 1926) is an African-American artist known for her work in the medium of assemblage. Saar is a visual storyteller and an accomplished printmaker. Saar was a part of the Black Arts Movement in the 1970s, which engaged myths and stereotypes about race and femininity. Her work is considered highly political, as she challenged negative ideas about African Americans throughout her career; Saar is best known for her art work that critiques American racism toward Blacks. Amoako Boafo
Thomas Amoako Boafo, known as Amoako Boafo (born 10 May 1984), is a Ghanaian painter and visual artist. Early life and education Boafo was born and raised in Osu, in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana. He attended the Ghanatta College of Art and Design in Accra, and later continued his education at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna in Austria. Career Boafo's portraits focus on posture, clothing, and the stroke of skin which he accentuates with the finger painting technique. In 2019, Boafo participated in a residency at the new Rubell Museum in Miami, Florida, and in 2020 collaborated with Dior for their Spring/Summer 2021 Men Collection. David Hammons
David Hammons (born July 24, 1943) is an American artist, best known for his works in and around New York City and Los Angeles during the 1970s and 1980s. Early life David Hammons was born in 1943 in Springfield, Illinois, the youngest of ten children being raised by a single mother. This dynamic caused great financial strain on his family during his childhood; he later stated that he is uncertain how they managed to 'get by' during this time. Although not inclined academically, Hammons showed an early talent for drawing and art; however the ease at which these practices came to him caused him to develop disdain for it. In 1962 he moved to Los Angeles, where he started attending Chouinard Art Institute (now CalArts) from 1966 to 1968 and the Otis Art Institute from 1968 to 1972. Noah Davis (painter)
Noah Davis (June 3, 1983 – August 29, 2015), was an American painter, installation artist, and founder of the Underground Museum in Los Angeles. When talking about his work, Davis has said, "if I’m making any statement, it’s to just show black people in normal scenarios, where drugs and guns are nothing to do with it," and describes his work as "instances where black aesthetics and modernist aesthetics collide." Eberhard Havekost (1967 – 5 July 2019) was a contemporary German painter based in Berlin and Dresden, who exhibited internationally. James Hayward (born 1943, San Francisco, California) is a contemporary abstract painter who lives and works in Moorpark, California. Hayward's paintings are usually divided in two bodies of work: flat paintings (1975-1984) and thick paintings (1984 to the present).
