Roberts County, South Dakota
Roberts County is a county in the U.S. state of South Dakota. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 10,280. Its county seat is Sisseton. The county was named either for S. G. Roberts of Fargo, North Dakota, or for Solomon Robar, an early local French fur trader. It was created on March 8, 1883, and fully organized by August 6 of that year. Its boundary was altered once, in 1885. Geography Roberts County is at South Dakota's northeastern corner. Its eastern boundary abuts Minnesota (across the Bois de Sioux River), and its northern boundary abuts North Dakota. The Cottonwood Slough flows southward, draining the upper portion of the county into the River. The terrain consists of rolling hills, devoted to agriculture. U.S. Route 81 or U.S. Highway 81 (US 81) is a major north–south U.S. highway that extends for in the central United States and is one of the original United States Numbered Highways established in 1926 by the American Association of State Highway Officials. The route of US 81 follows that of the old Meridian Highway (so called because it roughly followed the Sixth Principal Meridian of the US Public Land Survey System) which dates back as early as 1911. The highway has alternately (and unofficially) been known as part of the Pan-American Highway. In the segment in the state of Oklahoma, the highway closely corresponds to the old Chisholm Trail for cattle drives from Texas to railheads in Kansas in the 1860s and 1870s. South Dakota Highway 127 (SD 127) is a highway that runs from North Dakota Highway 127, northwest of White Rock to South Dakota Highway 10 in Sisseton. It was commissioned around 1980. History The route that is currently South Dakota 127 was established in 1926 as part of U.S. Highway 81, the Meridian Highway. In 1980, construction of the segment of Interstate 29 was completed north of exit 246, and U.S. 81 was rerouted from this point northward into North Dakota. The old route from I-29 to the North Dakota border near White Rock was designated as South Dakota Highway 127. South Dakota Highway 15
South Dakota Highway 15 (SD 15) is a state highway in the northeastern South Dakota, United States. It connects Clear Lake, Milbank, and Wilmot. SD 15 originally traveled from the Nebraska state line to the North Dakota state line. It followed what would eventually become U.S. Route 77 (US 77), which had been designated before 1931. Part of its path went north from Wilmot to Sisseton, then north to Hammer, along US 81's former path, west to Claire City, north to the North Dakota state line north of Claire City, where it met North Dakota Highway 18 (ND 18).
