Roberto Bazlen
Roberto Bazlen, also known as Bobi Bazlen (10 June 1902 – 27 July 1965) was an Italian writer and publicist. Biography Bazlen was born in Trieste on 10 June 1902. His father, Eugenio Bazlen, a Lutheran native of Stuttgart, died one year after his birth, and he was raised by the family of his mother, Clotilde Levi Minzi, from Trieste, belonging to the Jewish middle class. He studied in the German language school ''Real Gymnasium'', where he became passionate about literary subjects, encouraged by his teacher, Professor Mayer. After he left Trieste, he lived in Genoa, Milan and Rome. He was a friend of Luciano Foà, Adriano Olivetti, Giacomo Debenedetti, Italo Calvino and Eugenio Montale, and part of the circle of artists of the Caffè Garibaldi together with Umberto Saba, who in 1921 dedicated his ''Canzoniere'' to his "six readers" Bazlen, Romanellis, Giotti, Schiffrer, Rovan and Bolaffio. Vittorio Bolaffio
Vittorio Bolaffio (3 June 1883, Gorizia – 26 December 1931, Trieste) was an Italian painter. Biography Bolaffio was born in Gorizia on 3 June 1883, to Amodeo (or Amadio) and Pia Gentilomo. His father owned arable land, and traded in wines; his family was of Jewish origin, of comfortable economic conditions. Having spent his early years mainly in Palmanova, Bolaffio was initially trained in Trieste, studying under Giovanni Cossar and :it:Italico Brass, Italico Brass: it was his teachers who advised him to continue his education in Florence and to turn to Giovanni Fattori. Between 1900 and 1902 he attended the artist's studio, and in a course held by Fattori he met Amedeo Modigliani. Roberto Calasso (30 May 1941 – 28 July 2021) was an Italian writer and publisher. Apart from his mother tongue, Calasso was fluent in French, English, Spanish, German, Latin and ancient Greek. Daniele Del Giudice (11 January 1949 – 2 September 2021) was an Italian author and lecturer. He lived in Venice, where he taught theatrical literature at the University Iuav of Venice. Biography Born in Rome in 1949, Del Giudice researched avant-garde theatre first in Wrocław, Poland, and later political theatre, focusing on Italian actor Dario Fo. He also worked for various newspapers, becoming an established essayist and literary critic. His first novel in 1983, ''Lo stadio di Wimbledon'' (''Wimbledon stadium'') told the story of writer Roberto Balzen, who gives up writing to lead an active life. The novel was made into a film in 2002. Del Giudice died on 2 September 2021 at the age of 72. ''Zeno's Conscience'' ( it, La coscienza di Zeno ) is a novel by Italian writer Italo Svevo. The main character is Zeno Cosini, and the book is the fictional character's memoirs that he keeps because his psychiatrist recommended to do so in order to overcome his illness. He writes about his father, his business, his wife, and his tobacco habit. The original English translation was published under the title ''Confessions of Zeno''. After two novels, ''Una vita'' and ''Senilità'', were ignored by critics and public, and after a long period of literary silence, entirely devoted to work, in 1923 Svevo self-published this novel, quite different in style. It was appreciated by a close friend of Svevo's, James Joyce, who presented the book to two French critics, Valéry Larbaud and Benjamin Crémieux.
