Robert Watson (Newfoundland Politician)
Robert Watson (September 1, 1863 – May 4, 1930) was a civil servant and political figure in Newfoundland. He represented Trinity Bay in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly from 1897 to 1900, from 1902 to 1904 and from 1908 to 1913 as a Conservative and later as a member of the People's Party. He was born in Hant's Harbour, the son of Ellis C. Watson Ellis Cornish Watson (1843''England & Wales, Civil Registration Birth Index, 1837-1915'' – December 12, 1906) was an English-born merchant and political figure in Newfoundland. He represented Trinity Bay in the Newfoundland and Labrador H .... He served in the Executive Council as Minister of Posts and Telegraphs from 1897 to 1900 and colonial secretary from 1909 to 1913. Watson was manager of the Newfoundland Savings Bank from 1913 to 1916. He served as private secretary to the Governor of Newfoundland from 1916 to 1930. He died in St. John's at the age of 66. Newfoundland Colony was an English and, later, British colony established in 1610 on the island of Newfoundland off the Atlantic coast of Canada, in what is now the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. That followed decades of sporadic English settlement on the island, which was at first seasonal, rather than permanent. It was made a Crown colony in 1824 and a Dominion in 1907. Its economy collapsed during the Great Depression of the 1930s, and Newfoundland relinquished its dominion status, effectively becoming once again a colony governed by appointees from the Colonial Office in Whitehall in London. Trinity Bay, Newfoundland And Labrador
Trinity Bay is a large bay on the northeastern coast of Newfoundland in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The Bay along with Placentia Bay to the southwest define the isthmus of Avalon from which the Avalon Peninsula lies to the east of the main landmass of Newfoundland Island. The maximum depth of the bay is about . Major fishing communities include Trinity and Heart's Content. The smaller communities in Newfoundland may often be referenced by the Bay in which they are located, e.g.: 'Brownsdale, TB'. Industry Trinity Bay is the location of where a "nearly intact" specimen of giant squid was found, on September 24, 1877. In April 2003, thousands of dead northern cod, washed up on the shores of Smith Sound in a single weekend, prompting scientific inquiry into the cause.
