Robert W. Winston
Robert Watson Winston (September 12, 1860 – October 14, 1944) was a North Carolina state legislator, lawyer and author who wrote substantial early 20th-century biographies of Andrew Johnson, Jefferson Davis, and Robert E. Lee. He was a North Carolina Superior Court judge from 1889 to 1895. He was a principal of the law firm Aycock & Winston, his partner being former North Carolina governor Charles B. Aycock. The son of Patrick Henry Winston (North Carolina), Patrick Henry Winston and Martha William Byrd I, Byrd of Windsor Castle in Bertie County, his brother Francis D. Winston was a North Carolina lieutenant governor and also a North Carolina judge. Their brother George T. Winston was president of University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. Robert W. Winston contributed to the establishment of the Durham Public Library and the Bank of Chapel Hill, and was a president of the North Carolina Historical Society. Andrew Johnson
Andrew Johnson (December 29, 1808July 31, 1875) was the 17th president of the United States, serving from 1865 to 1869. He assumed the presidency as he was vice president at the time of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Johnson was a Democrat who ran with Lincoln on the National Union ticket, coming to office as the Civil War concluded. He favored quick restoration of the seceded states to the Union without protection for the newly freed people who were formerly enslaved. This led to conflict with the Republican-dominated Congress, culminating in his impeachment by the House of Representatives in 1868. He was acquitted in the Senate by one vote. Johnson was born into poverty and never attended school. He was apprenticed as a tailor and worked in several frontier towns before settling in Greeneville, Tennessee.
