Robert W. Mattson, Sr.
Robert William (Bob) Mattson Sr. (August 26, 1924 – March 14, 1982) was an American army veteran, lawyer, and politician in Minnesota, where he was the state Attorney General from 1964 to 1967. He was a member of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party. Mattson attended public schools in the Minnesota Iron Range city of Virginia, where he was born in 1924. He served in the U.S. Army in WWII and received the Purple Heart for wounds received in France. Upon return to his home town, Mattson was active in the Disabled American Veterans and was named first commander of the local chapter. Mattson attended Carleton College and was a graduate of the University of Minnesota Law School. He served as Deputy and Chief Deputy Attorney General under Miles W. Walter Frederick "Fritz" Mondale (January 5, 1928 – April 19, 2021) was an American lawyer and politician who served as the 42nd vice president of the United States from 1977 to 1981 under President Jimmy Carter. A U.S. senator from Minnesota from 1964 to 1976, he was the Democratic Party's nominee in the 1984 presidential election, but lost to incumbent Ronald Reagan in an Electoral College and popular vote landslide. Reagan won 49 states while Mondale carried his home state of Minnesota and the District of Columbia. His vice presidential nominee, U.S. Representative Geraldine Ferraro from New York, was the first female vice-presidential nominee of any major party in U.S. history. Chisholm is a city in St. Louis County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 4,976 at the 2010 census. The city has been called "The Heart of the Iron Range" due to its location in the middle of the Mesabi Iron Range. History The city was named for its founder, Archibald Mark Chisholm (1862–1933), a mining man and investor from Glengarry County, Ontario, Canada. Chisholm was incorporated in 1901. A post office called Chisholm has been in operation since 1901. With a railroad line to Duluth and plenty of mining work available in and near town, Chisholm's population grew rapidly, and by 1908 it had more than 6,000 people and 500 buildings. On September 5, 1908, a fast-moving forest fire obliterated the town due to dry conditions and the wooden construction of nearly all the town's buildings. Many people escaped by going into the lake.
