Bob Valentine (referee)
Robert Bonar Valentine (born 10 May 1939) is a former football referee from Scotland. He is mostly known for refereeing two matches in the 1982 World Cup in Spain: the infamous " Great Gijon Swindle" between West Germany and Austria, and the second-round match between Poland and the Soviet Union. He was also one of the linesmen (the other was Bruno Galler) for the classic semi-final that year between France and West Germany at the Estadio Sanchez Pizjuan in Seville. Valentine also refereed the Euro 84 match between France and Belgium at the Stade de la Beaujoire in Nantes, and the Euro 88 match between West Germany and Denmark at the Parkstadion in Gelsenkirchen. Robert Valentine (21 December 1877 – 16 January 1926) was an English rugby league and association football player. In association football, his regular position was as a goalkeeper, and he made ten first team appearances for Manchester United (1903–1908). He also played rugby league for Swinton. Valentine was born in 1877 in Pendleton, Salford, Lancashire, the youngest son of Robert Valentine, who was in the Navy, and Ann Wallwork Valentine. His elder brother was Swinton legend Jim Valentine (1866–1904). Their father died in 1884 when Robert was 6 years old, and he later moved in with his brother in Irlams o' th' Height. Robert John Valentine (born May 13, 1950), nicknamed "Bobby V", is an American former professional baseball player and manager. He also served as the athletic director at Sacred Heart University. Valentine played for the Los Angeles Dodgers (1969, 1971–72), California Angels (1973–1975), San Diego Padres (1975-1977), New York Mets (1977–78), and Seattle Mariners (1979) in MLB. He managed the Texas Rangers (1985–1992), the New York Mets (1996–2002), and the Boston Red Sox (2012) of MLB, as well as the Chiba Lotte Marines of Nippon Professional Baseball (1995, 2004–2009). He was the Lord Mayor of the City of Hobart local government area, in the State of Tasmania, Australia, from 1999 to 2011. In 2012, he was elected to the Tasmanian Legislative Council for the division of Hobart. Valentine is the great-grandson of Francis David Valentine, who was Mayor from 1925 to 1926. He is noted for his large number of compositions for the recorder.
