Robert Turnbull (railway Manager)
Sir Robert Turnbull (21 February 1852 22 February 1925) was a British railway manager. He joined the London and North Western Railway (LNWR) in 1868 and became its General Manager in 1914. He was made a member of the Royal Victorian Order in the 1911 New Year Honours and knighted in 1913. He served as a lieutenant colonel in the Engineer and Railway Staff Corps. A LNWR Claughton Class, Claughton Class locomotive, LNWR No. 1161 (LMS No. 5901) was named after him, this underwent a paper rebuild to LMS Patriot Class No. 5901, from 1934 later 5540, which was in turn rebuilt into a LMS Rebuilt Patriot Class No. 5540, BR No. 45540. London And North Western Railway
The London and North Western Railway (LNWR, L&NWR) was a British railway company between 1846 and 1922. In the late 19th century, the L&NWR was the largest joint stock company in the United Kingdom. In 1923, it became a constituent of the London, Midland and Scottish (LMS) railway, and, in 1948, the London Midland Region of British Railways: the LNWR is effectively an ancestor of today's West Coast Main Line. The Royal Victorian Order (french: Ordre royal de Victoria) is a dynastic order of knighthood established in 1896 by Queen Victoria. It recognises distinguished personal service to the British monarch, Canadian monarch, Australian monarch, or New Zealand monarch, members of the monarch's family, or to any viceroy or senior representative of the monarch. The Engineer and Logistic Staff Corps is a part of the Royal Engineers in the British Army Reserve. It is intended to provide advisers on engineering and logistics to the British Army at a senior level. Following its work creating the NHS Nightingale Hospitals the Corps was described as 'probably the greatest military unit you've never heard of'. LNWR Claughton Class
The London and North Western Railway (LNWR) Claughton Class was a class of 4-cylinder express passenger 4-6-0 steam locomotives. History The locomotives were introduced in 1913, the first of the class No. 2222 was named in honour of Sir Gilbert Claughton, who was the Chairman of the LNWR at that time. A total of 130 were built, all at Crewe Works up to 1921. Author Brian Reed points out that weight restrictions and equipment limitations at Crewe limited the size of the boiler, hence engine power. Cylinder design and valve events were not optimal, so the Claughton Class was a mediocre performer on the track. The LNWR reused numbers and names from withdrawn locomotives, with the result that the numbering was completely haphazard. An exception was made for the LNWR's war memorial locomotives. LMS Patriot Class
The Patriot Class was a class of 52 express passenger steam locomotives built for the London Midland and Scottish Railway. The first locomotive of the class was built in 1930 and the last in 1934. The class was based on the chassis of the Royal Scot combined with the boiler from Large Claughtons earning them the nickname ''Baby Scots''. A total of 18 were rebuilt to create the LMS Rebuilt Patriot Class between 1946 and 1948; thereafter those not subjected to rebuilding were often referred to as the Unrebuilt Patriot Class. These remaining 34 unrebuilt engines were withdrawn between 1960 and 1962. LMS Rebuilt Patriot Class
The London Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS), Rebuilt Patriot Class was a class of 4-6-0 steam locomotives. They were rebuilt from LMS Patriot Class locomotives (which were the fourth type of LMS 2A boilered 4-6-0 locomotives) over the period 1946–1949. By the end of 1947, the LMS had rebuilt seven engines, these being 5514/21/26/29–31/40. After nationalisation, a further eleven locomotives were rebuilt. Rebuilt locomotives retained their numbers. Guy Calthrop
Sir Calthrop Guy Spencer Calthrop, 1st Baronet (26 March 1870 – 23 February 1919) was a British railway manager. Biography Born in Uppingham, Rutland, his brother was Everard Calthrop, railway engineer. He entered the London and North Western Railway (LNWR) as a Cadet at the age of 16 in 1886. In 1892 he was appointed outdoor assistant to the Superintendent of the Line at Euston railway station, Euston, and in 1894. In 1901 he became personal assistant to Sir Frederick Harrison (railway manager), Frederick Harrison. However, in 1902 Calthrop left the LNWR to take up a position as General Superintendent of the Caledonian Railway, and in 1908 was promoted to General Manager. In 1910 Calthrop left Britain to become General Manager of the Buenos Aires and Pacific Railway.
