Robert Thorpe (judge)
Robert Thorpe (1773 – May 11, 1836) was a judge and political figure in Upper Canada and was later chief justice of Sierra Leone. Early life Thorpe was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1773. He was the second son of Robert T. Thorpe and Bonna Debrisay. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1788 and a degree in law in 1789 from Trinity College Dublin. He was admitted to the bar in 1790. At some point before 1815 he was given a Legum Doctor. In Canada In 1801, he was appointed as Chief Justice of Prince Edward Island, arriving in the colony in November 1802. He encouraged the attorney general Peter Magowan to prosecute minor crimes that were annoying to the population. Since he was not paid on time, he sailed to England in 1804 with a plan to unite Prince Edward Island, Cape Breton and Newfoundland. He was captured by a French privateer and taken to Spain. Chief Justice Of Sierra Leone
The Supreme Court of Sierra Leone is the highest court in Sierra Leone. It has final jurisdiction in all civil, criminal, and constitutional cases within Sierra Leone, and its decisions cannot be appealed. The Supreme Court has the exclusive constitutional power to overturn ruling of lower courts within the jurisdiction of Sierra Leone. The Supreme Court, along with the Court of Appeals, High Court of Justice, and magistrate courts form the Judicial branch of the Government of Sierra Leone. Sierra Leone Company
The Sierra Leone Company was the corporate body involved in founding the second British colony in Africa on 11 March 1792 through the resettlement of Black Loyalists who had initially been settled in Nova Scotia (the Nova Scotian Settlers) after the American Revolutionary War. The company came about because of the work of the ardent abolitionists, Granville Sharp, Thomas Clarkson, Henry Thornton, and Thomas's brother, John Clarkson, who is considered one of the founding fathers of Sierra Leone. The company was the successor to the St. George Bay Company, a corporate body established in 1790 that re-established Granville Town in 1791 for the 60 remaining Old Settlers. African Institution
The African Institution was founded in 1807 after British abolitionists succeeded in ending the slave trade based in the United Kingdom. The Institution was formed to succeed where the former Sierra Leone Company had failed—to create a viable, civilised refuge for freed slaves in Sierra Leone, in West Africa. It was led by James Stephen and William Wilberforce. From 1823, its work was mostly taken over by the Society for the Mitigation and Gradual Abolition of Slavery Throughout the British Dominions, and it ceased to exist sometime between 1826 and 1828. Charles William Maxwell
Lieutenant-General Sir Charles William Maxwell (1775 – 23 September 1848, Broadstairs) was a British soldier and colonial administrator. He was the eldest son of Charles Maxwell of Terraughty, Dumfriesshire and his third wife, Helen Douglas. He joined the British Army in 1796. He was knighted in 1836 and was appointed Lieutenant General in 1841. He was appointed Colonel of the 3rd West India Regiment in 1843. Samuel Samo
Samuel Samo was a Dutch slave trader who was the first person to be prosecuted under the British Slave Trade Felony Act 1811. Samuel Samo was the uncle of John Samo, a Dutch shopkeeper who served as King's Advocate and Member of His Majesty's Colonial Council of Sierra Leone. Samo was also a colleague of William Henry Leigh. On one voyage, 500 Africans died. Samo was based in the Îles de Los, a group of islands of Conakry in modern-day Guinea. He was seized along with Charles Hickson from there in early 1812 and taken to Freetown, Sierra Leone to be put on trial.
