Robert Thomas Brudenell-Bruce
Commodore Lord Robert Thomas Brudenell-Bruce (25 Jan 1845 – 15 Feb 1912) was a British Commodore of the Royal Navy. He was born the fourth son of Ernest Brudenell-Bruce, 3rd Marquess of Ailesbury. He gained the rank of Commodore in 1900 and inherited Deene Park in Northamptonshire on the death of his father in 1886. He married Emma Leigh in 1878 and had 4 sons and 3 daughters. Before inheriting Deene Park the family lived on Hayling Island, near Portsmouth. He died on 15 February 1912 at the age of 67. His eldest son and heir James Ernest was killed in the First World War in 1917. His second son, George Lionel Thomas, reverted his name back to Brudenell by Royal Licence and inherited Deene Park from his brother James Ernest. His fourth son John Charles Brudenell-Bruce became a Member of the Legislative Council (M.L.C.) of the British Virgin Islands. Commodore (rank)
Commodore is a senior naval rank used in many navies which is equivalent to brigadier and air commodore. It is superior to a navy captain, but below a rear admiral. It is either regarded as the most junior of the flag officers rank or may not hold the jurisdiction of a flag officer at all depending on the officer's appointment. Non-English-speaking nations commonly use the rank of flotilla admiral, counter admiral, or senior captain as an equivalent, although counter admiral may also correspond to ''rear admiral lower half'' abbreviated as RDML. Traditionally, "commodore" is the title for any officer assigned to command more than one ship, even temporarily, much as "captain" is the traditional title for the commanding officer of a single ship even if the officer's official title in the service is a lower rank. Ernest Augustus Charles Brudenell-Bruce, 3rd Marquess of Ailesbury PC (8 January 1811 – 18 October 1886), styled Lord Ernest Bruce from 1821 until 1878, was a British courtier and politician. He served as Vice-Chamberlain of the Household between 1841 and 1846 and again between 1852 and 1858. An MP for 46 years, he succeeded his elder brother in the marquessate in 1878. Background and education Brudenell-Bruce was born at Warren's Hotel, St James's Square, London, the second son of Charles Brudenell-Bruce, 1st Marquess of Ailesbury, by his wife the Honourable Henrietta Maria Hill, daughter of Noel Hill, 1st Baron Berwick. Deene Park
Deene Park, the seat of the Brudenell family since 1514, is a country manor located northeast of Corby in the county of Northamptonshire, England. The hall itself is a Grade I listed building dating back to the 14th century which has been modified several times since then to create the current structure. Seven of the Brudenell family were Earls of Cardigan – the most notable being the 7th Earl who led the Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava (1854). The 7th Earl died childless in 1868, and while the Earldom of Cardigan merged with the Marquessate of Ailesbury, the Deene Park estate passed, after the death in 1915 of his widow, to the descendants of his second cousin Ernest Brudenell-Bruce, 3rd Marquess of Ailesbury. John Charles Brudenell-Bruce
John Charles Brudenell-Bruce, MBE, OStJ (6 March 1885 – 13 February 1960), was a diplomat in the British service and a politician who served during the years immediately after the reintroduction of democracy in the British Virgin Islands in 1950. Between 1916 and 1918, during the First World War, he was a Second Secretary in the British Diplomatic Service. He later moved to the British Virgin Islands in the 1930s on the advice of his doctors to seek a warmer climate. He purchased an estate of approximately 230 acres on Peter Island at Little Harbour and established a small tobacco plantation. Subsequently he was elected as a member of First Legislative Council following the reintroduction of democracy in 1950. Although many of Brudenell-Bruce's family had enjoyed long and successful political careers in the United Kingdom, he did not stand in the subsequent general election. St Mary's Church, Hayling Island
St Mary's Church is a parish church in the Church of England in the parish of Portsmouth in Hampshire. History Built mainly in the early thirteenth century from imported stone, the church gained the addition on a timber porch in the fifteenth century and received significant interior restoration and alteration during the mid-late 19th Century. St Mary's Church became the central church on Hayling after flooding claimed the priory church, along with much of the southern edge of the Island in the 13th or 14th century. Although the original stocks and whipping post that were housed in the church yard have now been removed to Havant Museum, St Mary's still has many features worthy of note. The most noticeable of these is the ancient yew that dominates the church yard, believed to be one of the oldest in the country with a girth of some nine metres.
