In his lengthy political career, he served as the 71st governor of Vermont, a United States representative, and a U.S. Senator. A Republican, Stafford was generally considered a liberal, or "Rockefeller" Republican. Stafford is best remembered for his staunch environmentalism, his work on higher education, and his support, as an elder statesman, for the 2000 Vermont law legalizing civil unions for gay couples. Early life Stafford was born in Rutland, Vermont, to Bert Linus Stafford and Mabel R. (Stratton) Stafford. Bert Stafford was a 1901 graduate of Middlebury College who practiced law in Rutland, and was President of the Rutland County National Bank. 	Robert De Stafford Robert de Stafford ( 1039 – c. 1100) (''alias'' Robert de Tosny/Toeni, etc.) was an Anglo-Norman nobleman, the first feudal baron of Stafford in Staffordshire in England, where he built as his seat Stafford Castle. His many landholdings are listed in the Domesday Book of 1086. Origins According to Cawley, primary evidence is lacking to determine his parentage, but he is generally said to have been a son of Roger I of Tosny. Sanders (1960) gives him as a younger brother of Ralph I de Tosny (d. 1102), feudal baron of Flamstead in Hertfordshire who was the brother-in-law of William FitzOsbern, 1st Earl of Hereford. 	Rob Stafford Rob Stafford (born December 15, 1958) is a former Chicago television anchor and a former correspondent for NBC's Dateline NBC newsmagazine. Early life and education A native of New Hampshire, Robert R. Stafford earned a degree in political science and journalism at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1981. Professional career Stafford began his career as a reporter and anchor for KBJR-TV in Duluth, Minnesota and WFRV-TV in Green Bay, Wisconsin. He then became a morning news anchor and an investigative reporter at WFTV-TV in Orlando, Florida. While at WFTV, Stafford founded the station's investigative unit and launched a two-year investigation into hotel security in Orlando, which because of Disney World is a popular tourist destination. History The figure of the jovial friar was common in the May Games festivals of England and Scotland during the 15th through 17th centuries.
