Robert Smyth (American Politician)
Robert Smyth (26 February 1814 – 3 April 1898) was an Irish-born American politician. Smyth was born in Ireland on 26 February 1814. He immigrated to the United States in 1834 and settled in Linn County, Iowa by 1840. Smyth served as the first postmaster of Franklin Township, as well as a township clerk. Between 1843 and 1845, he served in the Iowa Territorial Legislature for District 8. He was a member of the Iowa House of Representatives for District 20 from 1846 to 1848, during the first convocation of the Iowa General Assembly. At the time, Symth was affiliated with the Democratic Party. From 1852 to 1866, Smyth primarily resided in Marion. Between 1868 and 1872, Smyth sat on the Iowa Senate, representing District 31 until 1870 and District 32 thereafter. Linn County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of the 2020 census, the population was 230,299, making it the second-most populous county in Iowa. The county seat is Cedar Rapids. Linn County is named in honor of Senator Lewis F. Linn of Missouri. Linn County is included in the Cedar Rapids, IA Metropolitan Statistical Area. History The earliest inhabitants of Linn County, prior to Anglo settlement, were the Sac and Fox tribes. Relations were described by 20th century historians as amicable. Native Americans provided food and furs to whites in exchange for merchandise. Linn County was created as a named but unorganized area on December 21, 1837, as a part of Wisconsin Territory. Mount Vernon is a city in Linn County, Iowa, United States, adjacent to the city of Lisbon. The population was 4,527 at the time of the 2020 census. Mount Vernon is part of the Cedar Rapids Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Mount Vernon was laid out in 1847, but its origins date back to at least 1838, when it was known as Pinhook, a popular rest stop on Military Road, which ran between Dubuque, on the Mississippi River, and Iowa City. It was renamed Mount Vernon in 1847, after the estate of George Washington. A post office has been in operation in Mount Vernon since 1849. The Iowa Conference Male and Female Seminary (which later became Cornell College) was established in the town in 1853, and the Northwestern Railroad reached it in 1859, bringing new business to the town as its population expanded.
