Robert Smith (birth name Harry Reynolds) (1847–1930) was a recipient of the Medal of Honor for heroism in combat during the Battle of Slim Buttes in Dakota Territory on September 9, 1876. Biography Smith was born as Harry Reynolds in Memphis, Tennessee, on August 8, 1847, and enlisted in the U.S. Army at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. under the assumed name of Robert Smith. He was assigned to Troop M, 3rd U.S. Cavalry. He was awarded the Medal of Honor on October 16, 1877. After leaving the Army, he reverted to his birth name. The Battle of Slim Buttes was fought on September 9–10, 1876, in the Great Sioux Reservation between the United States Army and Miniconjou Sioux during the Great Sioux War of 1876. It marked the first significant victory for the army since the stunning defeat of General George Custer at the Battle of Little Bighorn in June. The 3rd Cavalry Regiment, formerly 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment ("Brave Rifles") is a regiment of the United States Army currently stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. The regiment has a history in the United States Army that dates back to 19 May 1846, when it was constituted in the Regular Army as the Regiment of Mounted Riflemen at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. This unit was reorganized at the start of the American Civil War as the 3rd U.S. Cavalry Regiment on 3 August 1861. In January 1943, the regiment was re-designated as the 3rd Cavalry Group ( Mechanized). Today they are equipped with Stryker vehicles.
