Robert Scobie (Australian Politician, Born 1831)
Robert Scobie (7 September 1831 – 31 December 1909) was a Scottish-born Australian politician. He was born in Stirlingshire to Michael Scobie and Elizabeth Heugh. His family arrived in New South Wales in 1839 and settled near Maitland. Scobie worked on the family property and also had success on the goldfields, eventually owning a vineyard and orchard at Mount Pleasant near Maitland from 1859. On 2 June 1859 he married Mary Warren, with whom he had fifteen children. A prominent figure in local agricultural circles and a supporter of the temperance movement, he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly at the 1889 election as the Free Trade member for Hunter Hunting is the human activity, human practice of seeking, pursuing, capturing, or killing wildlife or feral animals. Stirlingshire or the County of Stirling, gd, Siorrachd Sruighlea) is a Counties of Scotland, historic county and registration countyRegisters of Scotland. West Maitland was an electoral district for the Legislative Assembly in the Australian State of New South Wales from 1859 to 1904, including the town of Maitland. It was abolished in 1904 due to the re-distribution of electorates following the 1903 New South Wales referendum, which required the number of members of the Legislative Assembly to be reduced from 125 to 90. John Fitzgerald Burns
John Fitzgerald Burns (1833 – 19 March 1911) was an Australian politician, member of the Parliament of New South Wales, Postmaster-General in the 1870s and Colonial Treasurer in the 1880s. Burns was born in the north of Ireland, and emigrated to New South Wales at an early age. In 1854 he married Lucy Maria Smith at Maitland. Having engaged in mercantile pursuits in the Hunter River district, Burns was elected to the Legislative Assembly for Hunter at a by-election in 1861, holding the seat until his defeat in the 1869 election. He was unsuccessful at the 1870 Goldfields North by-election, but was elected for Hunter in the 1872 election. He was Postmaster-General in the third Robertson ministry from February 1875 to March 1877 and in the Farnell ministry from December 1877 to December 1878. The election was conducted on the basis of a simple majority or first-past-the-post voting system. There were three significant changes from the 1891 election, the abolition of multi-member constituencies, the abolition of plural voting where an elector had property or residence in more than one electorate and that polls for every district were held on the same day. Free Trade Party
The Free Trade Party which was officially known as the Australian Free Trade and Liberal Association, also referred to as the Revenue Tariff Party in some states, was an Australian political party, formally organised in 1887 in New South Wales, in time for the 1887 colony election, which the party won. It advocated the abolition of protectionism, especially protective tariffs and other restrictions on trade, arguing that this would create greater prosperity for all. However, many members also advocated use of minimal tariffs for government revenue purposes only. Its most prominent leader was George Reid, who led the Reid Government as the fourth Prime Minister of Australia (1904–05). In New South Wales it was succeeded by the Liberal and Reform Association in 1902, and federally by the Anti-Socialist Party in 1906.
