Robert Davies Roberts (1851–1911) was a Welsh academic and educational administrator, best known in the field of adult education. Life Born at Aberystwyth on 5 March 1851, he was the eldest son of Richard Roberts, a timber merchant and shipowner there, and was brought up a Calvinistic Methodist. From a private school at Shrewsbury he went to the Liverpool Institute, and then on to University College, London. Here he distinguished himself in geology; he graduated B.Sc. in the University of London with first-class honours and scholarship in that subject in 1870. In 1871 he entered the University of Cambridge, as foundation scholar of Clare College, graduating B.A. in 1875 as second (bracketed) in the first class of the natural science tripos. Bob Roberts was an American cinematographer, noted for his work as a cinematographer during the Golden Age of Argentine Cinema from the late 1930s to the early 1950s. Before moving to Argentina in the late 1930s he worked on W. S. Van Dyke's ''White Shadows in the South Seas'' (1928). In 1944 the Argentine Academy of Cinematography Arts and Sciences gave Roberts the "Best Cinematographer" award for the critically acclaimed ''Su mejor alumno'', and at the 1946 Argentine Film Critics Association Awards he won the Silver Condor Award for Best Cinematography with Humberto Peruzzi and José María Beltrán for '' Pampa bárbara'' (1945). Robert "Silyn" Roberts (28 March 1871 – 15 August 1930) was a Welsh clergyman, writer, teacher and pacifist. History Roberts, a Calvinistic Methodist minister, was a noted Welsh-language poet, the winner of the Crown at the 1902 National Eisteddfod of Wales with his poem "Trystan ac Esyllt". Born in Bryn Llidiart, Llanllyfni, Caernarfonshire, he had worked as a slate quarryman before attending the University College of North Wales, Bangor, and Bala Theological College. From 1901 until 1912 he was a Calvinistic Methodist minister, firstly in Lewisham, London, and then in Tanygrisiau, Blaenau Ffestiniog, Merionethshire. Alfred William "Bob" Roberts (1907–1982) was a British folk singer, songwriter, storyteller, bargeman, author, and journalist. He was the last captain of a British commercial vessel operating under sail, and brought to an end a centuries-old tradition. Life Alfred William Roberts was born in the village of Hampreston, Dorset where his parents taught in the village school. Roberts's father, who was brought up in North Wales, ran the church choir as well as playing the piano, church organ, melodeon, concertina and fiddle for village dances. Robert S. Roberts (April 27, 1871 – January 21, 1930), sometimes referred to as "Ragtime" Bob Roberts, was an American novelty singer and ragtime song composer in the early years of the 20th century. Biography He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, the son of Nicholas (Nick) Roberts, a well-known clown who became the proprietor of one of the country's leading touring pantomime companies, and his French-born wife Augustine C. Zahn. Bob Roberts is assumed to have traveled widely with his father's shows in his youth, and indeed for the 1880 census when he was 9-years-old, his mother and brother were found lodging in a Richmond, New York hotel while father and son were performing somewhere nearby. Robert Roberts (15 June 1905 – 17 September 1974) was an English teacher, writer and social historian, who penned evocative accounts of his working-class youth in ''The Classic Slum'' (1971) and ''A Ragged Schooling'' (1976). Born and raised above his parents' corner shop in a deprived district of Salford, Roberts left school at 14 to undertake a seven-year apprenticeship as a brass finisher. Used as a form of cheap labour to carry out menial tasks, he was dismissed when the apprenticeship ended in 1926. Roberts inherited his mother's love of reading and socialist politics; while he spent the next three years unemployed, he attended evening classes to study foreign languages and social history. In 1929, he was hired as a tutor/teacher at a commercial college. A staunch internationalist, he was dismissed from this job in 1940 when he was exempted as a conscientious objector from military service in the Second World War.
