Robert Powell (actor)
Robert Powell (; born 1 June 1944) is an English actor who is known for the title roles in ''Mahler (film), Mahler'' (1974) and ''Jesus of Nazareth (TV series), Jesus of Nazareth'' (1977), and for his portrayal of secret agent Richard Hannay in ''The Thirty Nine Steps (1978 film), The Thirty Nine Steps'' (1978) and its subsequent Hannay (TV series), spinoff television series. Other major screen roles have included Tobias "Toby" Wren in the BBC science-fiction programme ''Doomwatch'' (1970), David Briggs in the sitcom ''The Detectives (1993 TV series), The Detectives'' (1993–1997) alongside Jasper Carrott, and Mark Williams (Holby City), Mark Williams in the medical drama ''Holby City'' (2005–2011). County Borough Of Salford
Salford was, from 1844 to 1974, a local government district in the county of Lancashire in the northwest of England, covering the city of Salford. It was granted city status in 1926. History Free Borough and Police Commissioners In about 1230, the vill of Salford, Lancashire, was created a free borough by charter granted by Ranulph de Blondeville, 4th Earl of Chester. The borough's government was in the hands of a borough-reeve and portmote court. The reeve was elected by the burgesses at large, while the head of the Molyneux family of Sefton presided over the court as hereditary steward of the Hundred of Salford. In 1791 the first modern local government was established in the area, when the Manchester and Salford Police Act created commissioners to administer the two towns.
