Robert Pohlman
Robert Williams Pohlman (March 1811 – 6 December 1877) was an English-born Australian lawyer and judge. Pohlman was born in London, the son of son of John George Pohlman and Annie Hamilton, ''née'' Williams, his wife . Little is known of his early life, other than that he studied law after finishing school, was admitted as a barrister in England, and as an advocate in Scotland in 1839. Pohlman and his younger brother Frederick emigrated to Australia, arriving at Port Phillip in October 1840. The following year the brothers purchased a portion of Darlington Station near Kyneton, north-west of Melbourne, where they ran several thousand sheep. Victorian Legislative Council
The Victorian Legislative Council (VLC) is the upper house of the bicameral Parliament of Victoria, Australia, the lower house being the Legislative Assembly. Both houses sit at Parliament House in Spring Street, Melbourne. The Legislative Council serves as a house of review, in a similar fashion to its federal counterpart, the Australian Senate. Although, it is possible for legislation to be first introduced in the Council, most bills receive their first hearing in the Legislative Assembly. The presiding officer of the chamber is the President of the Legislative Council. The Council presently comprises 40 members serving four-year terms from eight electoral regions each with five members. With each region electing 5 members using the single transferable vote, the quota in each region for election, after distribution of preferences, is 16.7% (one-sixth). Colin Campbell (Australian Politician)
Colin Campbell (21 January 1817 – 28 November 1903) was a pastoralist and politician in colonial Victoria, a member of the Victorian Legislative Council, and later, the Victorian Legislative Assembly. Early life Campbell was born in Glasgow, Scotland, the sixth son of Alexander Campbell, a merchant, and Barbara, ''née'' Campbell. He was educated at the Edinburgh Academy from 1825 to 1832 and then entered Exeter College, Oxford, gaining a B.A. in 1838. Colonial Australia Campbell and his brother Alexander arrived in the Port Phillip District via Hobart in 1839. When Victoria became a separate colony in 1851, Campbell refused a nomination to the Victorian Legislative Council and became a school inspector. John Thompson Charlton
John Thompson Charlton, also known as John Charlton Thompson (1826 – 26 November 1878) was a politician in colonial Victoria (Australia), a member of the Victorian Legislative Council. Early life Charlton was born in Hull, Yorkshire, England, the son of Thomas Charlton and his wife Rebecca, ''née'' Thompson and was baptised on 21 June 1826. Charlton married Hannah Elizabeth Breeze on 30 September 1850 at St Mary-at-Lambeth, Surrey, and the couple emigrated to Australia. Career in Australia Charlton was elected member of the Victorian Legislative Council for Ripon, Hampden, Grenville and Polwarth in December 1853, a position he held until he resigned in September 1854. The resignation was probably linked to his insolvency proceedings in November 1854 as Members of Parliament could not be bankrupt. Major-General Charles Pasley, CB, RE, (14 November 1824 – 11 November 1890) was a British Army officer and Colonial Engineer, Commissioner of Public Works and politician in colonial Victoria. Early life Pasley was the son of Lieutenant-General Sir Charles Pasley, KCB, and his second wife Martha Matilda ''née'' Roberts. He was born at Brompton barracks Chatham, Kent, England, and was educated at the King's School, Rochester, and the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich from 1840. He obtained a commission as second lieutenant in the Corps of Royal Engineers on 20 December 1843. He went through the usual course of professional instruction at the military school at Chatham, of which his father was the head, and proved himself so good a surveyor and mathematician that for some months he temporarily held the appointment of instructor in surveying and astronomy. Melbourne General Cemetery
The Melbourne General Cemetery is a large (43 hectare) necropolis located north of the city of Melbourne in the suburb of Carlton North. The cemetery is notably the resting place of four Prime Ministers of Australia, more than any other necropolis within Australia. Former Prime Minister Harold Holt's headstone is a memorial, as his remains have never been discovered. History The cemetery was established in 1852 and opened on 1 June 1853, and the Old Melbourne Cemetery (on the site of what is now the Queen Victoria Market) was closed the next year. Richmond, Victoria
Richmond is an inner-city suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Yarra local government area. Punt Road
Hoddle Highway is an urban highway in Melbourne linking CityLink and the Eastern Freeway, itself a sub-section of Hoddle Main Road. Both these names are not widely known to most drivers, as the entire allocation is still best known as by the names of its constituent parts: Hoddle Street, Punt Road and Barkly Street. The Supreme Court of Victoria is the highest court in the Australian state of Victoria. Founded in 1852, it is a superior court of common law and equity, with unlimited and inherent jurisdiction within the state.
