Robert Peterson (South Dakota Politician)
Robert D. Peterson (March 14, 1888 – September 2, 1968) was the 20th Lieutenant Governor of South Dakota serving from 1935 to 1937 under Governor Tom Berry. Robert Peterson was from Glenwood Township in Clay County. He was married to Esther Ellenore (Bring) Peterson (1888-1916). Both he and his wife were buried in Komstad Cemetery in Clay County, South Dakota Clay County is a county in the U.S. state of South Dakota. Lieutenant Governor Of South Dakota
The lieutenant governor of South Dakota is the second-ranking member of the executive branch of South Dakota state government and also serves as presiding officer of the South Dakota Senate. The lieutenant governor succeeds to the officer of governor if the office becomes vacant, and may also serve as acting governor if the governor is incapacitated or absent from the state. Since 1974, the lieutenant governor has been elected on a ticket with the governor. Seven lieutenant governors have gone on to be elected governor in their own right: Charles N. Herreid (1900 & 1902), Frank M. Byrne (1912 & 1914), Peter Norbeck (1916 & 1918), William H. McMaster (1920 & 1922), Carl Gunderson (1924), Nils Boe (1964 & 1966) and Dennis Daugaard (2010 & 2014). Tom Berry (South Dakota Politician)
Thomas Matthew Berry (April 23, 1879 – October 30, 1951) was the 14th Governor of South Dakota. Berry, a Democrat from Belvidere, South Dakota, served from 1933 to 1937. He is noted for defeating two incumbent Democratic United States senators in the state Democratic primary and then losing the seat to the Republicans in the general election. Biography Berry was born in Paddock, Holt County, Nebraska, and attended public school in O'Neill, Nebraska. He was married to Lorena McLain and they had four children. Career Berry moved to South Dakota in 1897. He homesteaded in Gregory County, moved to Todd County, and finally settled in Mellette County south of Belvidere. He built up a 30,000 acre (120 km2) ranch raising Hereford cattle and saddle horses. Clay County is a county in the U.S. state of South Dakota. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 14,967. The county seat is Vermillion, which is also home to the University of South Dakota. The county is named for Henry Clay, American statesman, US Senator from Kentucky, and United States Secretary of State in the 19th century.
