Robert Mirabal
Robert Mirabal (born October 6, 1966) is a Pueblo musician and Native American flute player and maker from Taos Pueblo, New Mexico. His flutes are world-renowned and have been displayed at the Smithsonian Institution's Museum of the American Indian. An award-winning musician and leading proponent of world music, Mirabal performs worldwide, sharing flute songs, tribal rock, dance, and storytelling. Mirabal was twice named the Native American Music Awards' Artist of the Year, and received the Songwriter of the Year award three times. He was featured in Grammy Award winning album, '' Sacred Ground: A Tribute to Mother Earth'' in 2006 for Best Native American Music Album Mirabal also published a book of storytelling poetry and prose in 1994 entitled ''Skeletons of a Bridge'' and is currently writing a second book, ''Running Alone in Photographs''. Taos Pueblo, New Mexico
Taos Pueblo is a census-designated place (CDP) in Taos County, New Mexico, just north of Taos. The population was 1,264 at the 2000 census. Geography Taos Pueblo is located at (36.448735, -105.553979). Rio Pueblo de Taos passes through Taos Pueblo. According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 15.6 square miles (40.5 km), all land. Culture and history Taos Pueblo is the only living Native American community designated both a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and a National Historic Landmark. The multi-storied Taos Pueblo adobe buildings have been continuously inhabited for over 1000 years. Tiwa Languages
Tiwa (Spanish ''Tigua'', also ''E-nagh-magh'') is a group of two, possibly three, related Tanoan languages spoken by the Tiwa Pueblo, and possibly Piro Pueblo, in the U.S. state of New Mexico. Subfamily members and relations Southern Tiwa is spoken in by around 1,600 people in Isleta Pueblo, Sandia Pueblo, and Ysleta del Sur Pueblo (Tigua Pueblo). The remaining two languages form a subgrouping known as ''Northern Tiwa''. Northern Tiwa consists of Taos spoken by 800 people in Taos Pueblo and Picuris spoken by around 220 people in Picuris Pueblo. Modern Dance
Modern dance is a broad genre of western concert or theatrical dance which included dance styles such as ballet, folk, ethnic, religious, and social dancing; and primarily arose out of Europe and the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was considered to have been developed as a rejection of, or rebellion against, classical ballet, and also a way to express social concerns like socioeconomic and cultural factors. ''Land'' is an album by the Native American musician Robert Mirabal, released in 1995. The album originated as a score for a dance piece by Eiko & Koma, which was first performed in 1991. It was nominated for a First Americans in the Arts award. Mirabal and Eiko & Koma adapted part of the score for later productions. Production Produced in part by Mike Wanchic, ''Land'' was recorded in Bloomington, Indiana, in a week. Mirabal wrote the score; he sang and played flute and his cousin Reynaldo Lujan sang and played drums. ''Land'' is about surviving in a harsh terrain. Funk
Funk is a music genre that originated in African American communities in the mid-1960s when musicians created a rhythmic, danceable new form of music through a mixture of various music genres that were popular among African Americans in the mid-20th century. It de-emphasizes melody and chord progressions and focuses on a strong rhythmic groove of a bassline played by an electric bassist and a drum part played by a percussionist, often at slower tempos than other popular music.
